The Pirate-bar/De Vloek is a warehouse in the harbour of Scheveningen that has been squatted five years ago after it was left empty for ages by a chemical paint cleaning company, that left all their waste there, thank you very much.
After the place was squatted lots of things developed there:
There were people starting up a VOKU (soupkitchen) on Mondays, a living area was set up, bands played shows in the small bar space soon enough and local artists were invited to join in and look at the possibilities.
It now facilitates rehearsal rooms for bands, an excellent organic vegan restaurant, artist work-spaces and a big concert hall. All these things together makes that it attracts at least 200 people on a weekly basis.
In short: it's one of the most valued alternative free spaces in The Hague!
Despite previous agreements, the city hall has decided to disregard the overall value of this cultural centre, and rather evict it for storing some boats for a covert real estate group (Fortis Bank Vastgoed) claiming to be a boatclub.
In the meanwhile the local government says they're doing all they can to make The Hague a 'Creative Class' city, but with evicting the Piratebar it once more renders their words empty.
Anyway, we don't need a government to be creative ourselves. So we'll stop them.
Help us by signing the petition online, or come out to the streets on Saturday for a big demonstration in the town centre, there'll be noise! 15:00 Kerkplein, Den Haag.
