Fans of the Optic Nerve and the Byrds are going to have a field day with this one! This collection of rare 45s, comp tracks and unreleased material by The Lears is one of the finest examples of folk-rock since the ‘60s. The band has been playing around Florida since 1990 and has seen several releases on various labels since 1993. The band broke up in 1999, but their music lives on!
Well let's see...I started playing guitar, singing and writing songs in a band called Bite in 1972; then formed The Look (sort of a cross between The Who & Alice Cooper) in 1974, then The Shades in 1976. As The Shades, we released one '45 rpm single called "Time For A Change" b/w "Shake It" that I put out on my own label, Direct Hit Records, in July 1980. I still have a few of these singles around for sale too! The Shades began as a punk band, but evolved into a mod/pop/garage sound later on. The band went their separate ways the next year and then I helped form Perfect Strangers in 1982. Perfect Strangers were only a duo to start with, but moved onto an electronic trio, then eventually to a new wave country punk sound at the end. We recorded about a dozen songs all together, but never had any released. I formed The Petal Pushers in 1988 playing in a garage/psychedelic vein. We recorded a few tunes, again that never got released. I helped form The Lears with Paul Mutchler in 1990. We used various friends and musicians to fill our mostly vacant rhythm section spots over the course of the next 10 years. We had our only CD "The Story So Far..." released by Get Hip Records in 1997, with great reviews all over the world. We recorded 3/4 of an unreleased 2nd album entitled "Return Flyte" before calling it a day in 2000.
I also was the editor/owner of a mid-80's garage/pop/psychedelic magazine called Kaleidoscope. There were 4 issues released between 1986 and 1990. The first two issues came with flexi-discs included, and the last two came inside of compilation LP's with unreleased songs by various bands from around the globe in 1988-1990. Only the first 3 issues are still available - Issue 4 is SOLD OUT - sorry! I reactivated my record label Direct Hit Records in conjunction with Kaleidoscope magazine in 1988 by releasing Issue 3 of the mag inside the comp LP "The Exploding Underground", then in 1989 came a compilation LP of 60's Italian garage/psychedelic bands called "60's Beat Italiano Vol.1". No, there never was a volume 2 either sad to say. Issue 4 came out the next year, in 1990, with the comp LP "Kaleidoscopic Vibrations". The Tampa Flamin' Groovies-inspired roots rock band The Barons of Love recorded and released an LP "Chickamauga" on the label as well as the Italian Long Ryders: The Electric Shields LP "White Buffalo County" all in 1991.
I have been writing a full-page column called "DD's Garage" in the British rock magazine Bucketfull of Brains since 1992. Other magazines I've had articles printed in include: Shindig!, Misty Lane, and The Castle (the fanzine for the 60's L.A. band: Love)!
How are you over there, are you up to much musically? We are here putting a single out (Psychodrama) and finally giving the album some proper promotion. Did BOB ever come out with the review?
I'm still recording every week, experimenting quite a bit, seems to be going well.
