Sounds Like
A girl, an extremely untechnical guitar technique and a rich, sweet voice.
‘Hot Stars in a Cold Sky’ was recorded over six months in Hobart studios ‘Huon Delta Studios’ and ‘the red room’, with producer Andrew Smyth at the controls. From the rejoicing of love in ‘Second Storey’, the soul searching of ‘Green Lights’ and dealing with grief in ‘Gravity’, ‘Hot Stars in a Cold Sky’ is a stellar collection of songs that is bound to steal the hearts of listeners.
Heartfelt songs. Gentle harmonies. Raw, unabashed honesty. Hobart singer/songwriter Amy Kendall will soothe your soul with her angelic voice, floating guitar melodies and insightful 'storytelling' lyrical style.
Hailing from a small town in NSW, Amy began her musical career at an early age, singing into permanent markers with her sister Sally to 80's movies, and accompany Sally on the glockenspiel and backup harmonies as Sally learned guitar. 'I remember other children playing in the mud outside, and I was singing into a cassette recorder pretending I was on the radio!' Amy recalls. It wasn't until Amy was 13 that she picked up a guitar and taught herself to play and started writing songs.
With influences ranging from Sarah McLachlan, The Waifs, Clare Bowditch, Edie Brickell and Joni Mitchell, Amy has carved her own unique style from a blend of folk, roots and pop music.
Since moving to Tasmania in 2005, Amy has been captivating Hobart audiences with her sweet, soulful voice, flowing guitar melodies and honest, down-to-earth songwriting style. Now a regular at Irish Murphy's and CBar @ The Waterfront, Amy has become a familiar face on the original music circuit, both in Hobart and across the state.
In 2006-2007 Amy held a residency at one-time Sandy Bay establishment Gilt Cafe and Restaurant, charming Friday night audiences and fostering a diverse and healthy music community through a variety of local support acts. She has also worked her magic on many a delighted punter at The Republic Bar, Alleycat Bar, Telegraph Hotel, Taste of Tasmania, Lark Distillery, Maginty's (Burnie), Brookfield Vineyard, D'Art Factory, Tasmanian Inn and many other local venues. Amy also appears on the last Sunday of each month at the CBar @ The Waterfront Hotel in Bellerive.
Amy was invited to perform alongside some of Australia's blues greats at the Australian Blues Music Festival in February 2009, where she captivated audiences with stories from interstate.
In 2008 Amy was joined by Tore Pedersen on bass guitar, and Andrew Smyth on percussion, with plenty of help from her friends for the recording of 'Hot Stars in a Cold Sky' EP. THis was released in November 2008 to a standing only crowd at the Alley Cat Bar in North Hobart.
In 2009 Amy, Tore and Andrew decided they needed a formal name and Amy Kendall and the Kitchenhands was born. With a sweet blend of mandolin, banjo, ukulele, hand drums, guitars, bass and stomp boxes, Amy Kendall and the Kitchenhands are the perfect recipe to kick back, relax and settle in for some great tunes.
Amy was recently on ABC 936 in Hobart, and Christopher Lawrence said this...
"Monday February 19th 2007
Heritage, Redheads & Great New Talent
.....I reckon that one of 936's best components is the live music we put to air. There's a big studio next door where musos collect daily to perform 'unplugged' direct to listeners; a great showcase for emerging talent, such as the Afternoon's first 'live' guest for 2007, Hobart-based singer-songwriter Amy Kendall. She performed two of her songs - 'Second Story' and 'Fireflies', and to my ear she's someone who'll be doing very, very well, very soon. If she's as successful as she deserves to be, you can say where you heard her first."
ABC936 are using part of 'Second Storey' and the interview as a promo. Amy hasn't heard this. All of her colleagues have. Amy says she's always loved the ABC. Amy's Mum was Very Very Excited that she got to meet Christopher Lawrence. "Oh Amy.. what was itlikemeetingchristopherlawrence siiigh."
