Reviews of "Kite":
"Obenski will hook even the most hardened cynic" - Performing Songwriter
"...you may feel as though the likelihood of releasing an album and having it gain nationwide attention must be a struggle bordering on the impossible, even in this era of Myspace superstars. Well, it's not impossible, and I've got the CD to prove it: Kite, by Amy Obenski." - Estrogenius Radio
"I can't believe this is only Amy Obenski's second record. The songs on Kite are not only fantastic, but there doesn't seem to be a single wasted note. Obenski's voice is haunting and the arrangements compliment the vocals perfectly. I'm hesitant to categorize it, but if I was to compare her to an artist we can all relate to I would say she sounds a lot like Joni Mitchell or Suzanne Vega. Great record and I can't wait to see her live." -High Bias
"Hearing Amy Obenski's voice is like hearing a familiar voice say 'Don't worry, it's OK'... This record is perfect for coming home from the office after a harried day of people yapping in your ear. Crafted with care, it goes from beginning to end without a letdown." -NowOnTour.com
"With a firm, but feminine voice that sometimes sings in the spirit of Natalie Merchant or Tori Amos, San Diego native Amy Obenski has a naturally slick vocal style. She refines every sound that seeps from her soul, only utilizing just the right amount to get across her musical drift." -San Diego Troubadour
About Amy Obenski
We've all heard a female singer-songwriter who wears her emotions on her sleeve and drips with sincerity. But Amy Obenski is not that. With "gripping" lyrics and "haunting" vocals, Obenski's songs are conveyed to the audience on a more intimate level (Good Times Santa Cruz, High Bias). Like a whisper that shakes your soul awake, her voice is gentle yet oddly powerful, rising above and piercing through the noise and chaos of today's world.
Obenski's song, "Carousel", was recently placed on the hit TV show, Grey's Anatomy. Since then the song moved to number 23 on the iTunes Folk Chart, rewarding this independent singer-songwriter after five years of hard work. Her first success landed in her lap in 2005 when an MTV executive approached her after hearing her songs on someone's iPod. Her debut album, "What We Tell", which was finished only two years after writing her first song, was then licensed by MTV for use in their show, "MADE".
Amy Obenski has now released two albums that have received radio play throughout the West Coast, Alaska, and Massachusetts. She's played notable venues such as Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco, and has opened for the John Butler Trio at the Temple Bar in Los Angeles.
Growing up in San Diego, California, Obenski was encouraged musically from the beginning. She started singing in choir at age five, and began piano lessons shortly after. Training in a variety of classical and jazz styles, Obenski remained loyal to music all the way through college even while majoring in Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz. One year after college graduation and tired of nine to five office work, she picked up a guitar and wrote her first song. Finally, there was no denying it. She was a songwriter.
