Using all the letters of his own name, established Dutch visual artist Diet Wiegman, made eleven anagrams- twelve new names including his own. He uses these names to put his widely diverse work under different headings. This is the ‘Diet Wiegman Group’... an ensemble consisting of just one artist, Diet Wiegman himself.
The various art forms of Diet Wiegman are showcased in this unique documentary by Mike Redman.
A film without words that tells its own, expressive story. A story about today and yesterday that fears art nor kitsch, cliché nor anecdote. Sometimes philosophical, sometimes downplaying its seriousness, sometimes giving it a wink. Conceptual art in which sculpture, fashion, dance, architecture and many other disciplines meet.
Diet Wiegman moves like an omnivore across life’s stage...
In the art scene, Diet Wiegman (1944) is an established name. Wiegman’s grandfather and father preceded him as artists, a background which led him, born in The Netherlands, to visit the Rotterdam Art College from 1961 to 1965. Ever since he too has been fully dedicated to the life of an artist.
People first learned of his work through renowned gallery Delta. Joint projects with other artists led to interesting things, as were his own projects involving people on the street.
Wiegman’s tone-downed view of life can be traced in his work, often tenacious and running against the grain. His realistic ceramics, and mirror- and shadow objects form just the tip of the iceberg in his world of illusion and reality.
Wiegman has worked on many sculptures in the public space, and his art can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
MIKE REDMAN;
Multidisciplinary and self-educated Mike Redman (1978) knew at a very early age which direction he’d head into. With school not feeding his creative growth enough, he used his holidays to intensively experiment with video and music. His first short videofilm he made at age fourteen. It garnered him a lot of publicity and a job at renowned special effects studio Atelier Didden where he built up an impressive resume as a special effects / make up artist.
After this fruitful period, Redman has concentrated on independently producing and directing videoclips, television programs and documentaries. His style is best described as headstrong simplicity.
He has also developed musically. Besides dozens of international releases he has created an independent record label, and travels the world with his different music projects. In his most recent project ‘Anagram’, created together with Diet Wiegman, all these skills come together.
