Sounds Like
Acoustic rock with a bluesy, funky, or sometimes twangy edge and the occasional improvisational exploration... Kinda like G Love jamming with Jerry Garcia and Ray Charles, if Ray played bass. Or Jack Johnson jamming with the Meters on some U2 tunes. Hell, come find out for yourself!
Currently an atypical acoustic outing, Analog Playground plays around the Binghamton, NY area. We keep a light schedule, so catch us when you get the chance!
What you'll hear when you do stop by: our own take on newer artists like Jack Johnson, Donavan Frankenreiter, G Love & Special Sauce, mixed in with great tunes from the Grateful Dead, Phish, Neil Young, choice tunes from the 1990s and even some Ray Charles, Meters, or a bluesed out jazz classic.
Why "atypical"? Well, we strive to emphasize a groove, even without a drummer... people have been known to dance. We're louder & looser than what typically comes to mind when you think "acoustic". We mess with our choice of cover tunes, play them differently than you might be used to, rearrange them, split 'em open when we feel like it. Keeps life interesting. It's a playground, afterall.
Some of our favorite places: The Blind Tiger Pub, McGirk's Irish Pub, Number 5 Restaurant, Sidelines. We like parties, too, so contact us if you'd like us to play your next backyard barbeque, house party, etc.
Bio-type stuff
Jerret's musical lineage wanders a bit, having started on trumpet. Guitar-oriented activity was more straight-forward. In college, he formed ComaToast - a punk/funk/prog mishmash that never really did anything, but was a fun learning experience. Jerret joined former members of Oswego, NY-area staple Calamity Jane in 1994. "Unwanted Son" (hey, the bass player had issues) was the result, mixing up heavy-ish alterna-covers with funkier originals penned by Jerret. After a few years out in Flagstaff, AZ Jerret moved to New Jersey and landed in Caterpillar Effect, which preceded Newget (BTW, Brian from CatFx & Newget was also a trumpet player). Moving again, Jerret spent a few years in Binghamton, NY with many one-off jams around town. Finally, a few of those jams payed off when Chris and Dave came into the mix on a regular basis, eventually leading to what is now Analog Playground.
Chris also began as a trumpet player... go figure. He has been a regular on the Binghamton band scene over the years, playing in the Big Ear, The Other Ear, and Gambling Souls. Jerret played a few basement jams with Chris and his wife (pianist) when he first moved to Binghamton, and a re-connection was made after a few years that eventually lead to what became the acoustic version of Analog Playground. He also plays Bass in the incredibly talented and inspirational St. James folk group.
Dave never played trumpet. He’s been a music fiend since he was a tyke and has absorbed anything & everything including 60s & 70s AM radio, Classic Rock, Metal, ‘80s Punk, Jazz, Blues, Jam bands, you name it. Guitar came into the picture during the mid ‘80s, along with spending time at the mall, studying the collected works of Rush, AC DC, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Black Sabbath et al and attending lots & lots of keg parties. The ‘90s included working, getting seriously into computers & t3H 1NT@RW3B, checking out lots of live bands and getting more into the Dead & Phish. Guitar took a backseat during this time, but tons of music was absorbed. The late ‘90s saw a return to regular guitar study & practice. He met Jerret in 2001 while posting on a Phish-related message board during work hours at a local corporate hellhole. A few front porch jams eventually led to electric jams where Chris, Dave and Jerret all ended up in the same place. After churning through several disappointing drummers, the trio decided to stay that way, as Analog Playground.
