LOOK OUT FOR ALBUM RELEASE- 19TH MARCH- CROWS ROOKS AND RAVENS
Crows, rooks and ravens have long been associated with myths, fables and folk tales. They represent dark goddesses including the Valkyries of Norse legends and the Irish Morrigan. They are contradictory – symbols of death but also of hope – and enigmatic – they are travellers and keepers of secrets.
The 13 songs (and 2 bonus tracks) on Scottish singer/songwriter Andi Neate’s fifth album - Crows, Rooks and Ravens - tell a traveller’s tales of endings and beginnings, journeys and homecomings. There are songs about circuses and rocketships, night driving and fairy tales, peopled with colourful characters – the lion tamer, the astronaut, Mr Romeo and Storybookman – sharply observed and lightly drawn, with an emotional honesty which makes them easy to connect with.
Andi is an expressive performer, with a gift for melody, memorable hooks and delightfully offbeat lyrics. Her voice ranges from powerhouse to wistful sweetness; her music style covering folk, rock and jazz... and a touch of gospel on Shine.
She has been described as “angel-voiced” and “street tough” and compared with Suzanne Vega, Ani Difranco and the Cranberries. Her appearance is a mixture of confidence and vulnerability - from the trademark tattoos writhing round her right arm to the tumbling mass of dark hair to her sometimes stocking soles when performing. Her childhood on a remote west coast island encouraged her natural affinity with nature, and the strong sense of independence which led her to building her own house – brick by brick - and which has taken her and her music round the world.
Andi has performed as far afield as Canada, Tblisi, Sicilly and the Falkland Islands as well as making regular appearances at Prague, Glastonbury, Wickerman and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. She was one of the winners of Burnsong Gathering (2007), the national competition to find and promote the best new songwriting talent in Scotland. The song which won her that place – Home – is one of the new studio recordings on this CD and eloquently expresses the bitter-sweet contradictions of the place you come from.
Crows, Rooks and Ravens was recorded over the course of a year, in Bath and Edinburgh, with co-writer/producer Joe Bennett (whom she met through Burnsong Gathering) and some of Scotland’s most talented musicians including Robert McFall, Dave Milligan, Colin Steele.and Traditional Vocalist of the Year Mairi Campbell. The production ranges from songs with the full band treatment (Storm Crow, Too Busy Playing God), with strings, brass and backing vocals, to pared back emotive solo voice and guitar.
The official launch for Crows, Rooks and Ravens is on 19 March at Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, followed by a 4 month UK tour, from Belfast to Bournemouth, Cromarty to Cambridge, via Prague and Glastonbury. Later in the year she will be taking part in the official Homecoming celebrations in Ullapool.
