Andrea Gibbs is STARKERS...............(review The West Australian 17JULY)
Audiences keen to check out Perth comedian Andrea Gibbs' latest effort should brace themselves for a delightfully confronting evening of nudity, sexual references and unabashed swearing.
Gibbs, who says her dumping from the 96fm Breakfast Show was a blessing in disguise, is back doing what she does best in Starkers, a presentation of three monologues, written by local writers Kate Mulvany, Luke Milton and Damon Lockwood.
Directed by Renee Newman-Storen and featuring a fantastic voice-over sequence by television news stalwart Peter Holland, Starkers introduces us to three women expose themselves in, ahem, more ways than one.
While Mulvany's Naked Ambition, about a girl who dreams of grabbing a place in the history books by reviving the hallowed Aussie tradition of streaking at the cricket, had some funny moments with its Australiana language and finely timed nudity scenes - executed brilliantly by Gibbs - it started slowly and generally failed to wow.
But the mood warmed with the entry of Milton's character, a hardened jailbird with rather an unconventional, and particularly revolting, method of personal storage, and by the time we were introduced to Lockwood's politically incorrect elderly widow Dora Green, the laughs were thick and fast.
Nothing was out of bounds for the writers or performer, with Gibbs' take on the saggy-boobed, brandy swilling Dora Green reducing a horrified audience to hysterics as she spoke of her penchant for "offending Jesus" during trips to the dentist.
The pairing of the writers' scripts with Gibbs' unique skill for improvisation is a match made in heaven, with the 25-year-old conquering the wordy sequences with confidence and giving a refreshingly raw performance in a show offering what she says is "just a little rudeness" and which works nicely with the intimate atmosphere of the Blue Room.

Couldn't think of a decent premise for my self promotion so like a real estate agent cold calling for home sellers, I'll just leave my card and walk away. Looking forward to the Adelaide shows though.

Hey Dr Drea,
I thought I'd share my new personal life philosophy with you. It was inspired by the great Kelis:
"My dairy drink treat brings all the male gender to the grassy area in the front of my residence. They say it is superior to yours. Yes, they are correct, it is far superior than yours. I could pass along this knowledge, but there would be a fee"
