Andrew Bain fulfilled a lifelong dream as he signed a deal with SonyBMG, joining a long list of greats released by the label that includes Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras to name just a few. It was a momentous achievement for Andrew considering the majority of classical labels initially turned him down with his original demo. However, Andrew's interpretation of Prince's 'Purple Rain', a daring demo outside a genre steeped in tradition, finally captured the imagination of SonyBMG and clinched the lucrative million pound investment deal.
"This is the ultimate dream come true," explains an elated Andrew. "Not only have I finally got a record deal, but they understand my eclectic taste in music. Who needs yet another version of Nessun Dorma? Opera really was the pop music of its day, so I feel that mixing this style with the pop songs of today is a natural progression despite what the critics might say."
Andrew became a practising NHS dentist when he was 24 in North London where he loved the community feeling that comes from continued patient care, but he put his dentistry career on hold to concentrate on his passion for music. Over the past 10 years as a dentist, Andrew fed his musical ambitions by using his holidays and spare time to sing in West-End choruses and amateur opera. His work included a tour with Cameron Mackintosh's production of Les Misérables in 1999 and Bill Kenwright's Whistle Down the Wind in 2002.
Andrew has already entered the studio to record his debut album for release in 2009 and will not be recording any classical standards, opting instead for a repertoire that includes Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars', Abba's 'The Winner Takes It All' and Aerosmith's 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' in an operatic style befitting his tenor voice. Andrew now finally has the opportunity to bring his love of opera and pop music together and share it with you!
