Interests

  • General

Music, theatre (www.grimm-players.org.uk), literature, but there's never enough time, with a three-year old running around! Family comes first, and everything else gets squeezed into what's left...
  • Music

I'm available for pit/session work on guitar, bass, clarinet (both Bb and A, for all you classical nuts) and saxes (mainly tenor and soprano)... and there was one gig at the start of the year when I played them all on the same night! Highlights of my time in the pit include "Sweeney Todd" and "Kiss Me Kate" on bass, "42nd Street" and "The King and I" on reeds, and "West Side Story" on guitar, and another production on reeds, and lead guitar on "Bat Boy"!

My influences are mostly guitarists: Alex Lifeson, Andy Summers, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth and Prince. Fave bands include Rush, Tool, Genesis, Dream Theater and English 80s prog (eg, Marillion, Pallas, IQ etc).

On a jazz thing, everyone from Fats Waller through Charlie Parker to John Coltrane. I've just rediscovered (on iTunes) an album by jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris that was a huge influence back when I could still play vinyl!

I also love Sondheim, Arvo Part and opera from the romantic (Tristan & Isolde, La Boheme) to the comic (Marriage of Figaro is a great farce!)

  • Movies

My absolute favourite film is "Until the End of the World", but I also love "Shaun of the Dead" and an old vaudeville film called "Hellzapoppin'"

"Aliens" is my fave of that series, but do I dare I admit a soft spot for "Attack of the Clones" in the Star Wars saga?!

  • Television

Spaced, Spooks, NCIS and all the River Cottage programmes. I enjoy watching cricket, but haven't played since I split my Achilles tendon a couple of years ago.
  • Books

I loved Neal Stephenson's "Baroque Cycle" and "Q - The Dance of Death" by 'Luther Blissett'. I've just bought the new Thomas Pynchon novel, but haven't managed to start it yet!
  • Heroes

"Hero" is a very big word. The only people I can place in that category right now are: Frank Zappa, Richard Feynmann and (of course) my parents.

About me:

I'm a husband, father, professional magazine editor and freelance musician.

I've been married to Jessica for 9 years and we have two sons, Thomas (5) and George (15 months).

My 'day job' is Editor/Publisher of Clinical Research focus, a magazine for professionals involved in the development and testing of new medicines and medical devices, whether in the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare professions (eg, research nurses) or academia. I've been doing this since January 2001, and I've become accustomed to the adrenalin rush around press week! I wrote some short stories years ago (when I started out in journalism) which I might show to someone... some day!

I'm also a freelance musician, playing guitar for a variety of rock/pop/jazz/funk/blues/country projects, mostly to the west of London. I also play sax (tenor, soprano and alto) and clarinet for local amateur theatre productions (when I'm not up on the stage acting/singing). I've got some studio experience, but mostly I love playing live, whether from strict parts or looser jams/improvs. I'm always looking for interesting new ventures, so if you need a very versatile musician, drop me a line...

When I set up this page, I stupidly didn't choose the "Artist" option, but I've now made a separate page here; why not stop by for some of my songs etc...

See more on my website, my blog, my pics on Flickr and my magazine.

Who I'd like to meet:

You!

More seriously, I'd love to convince Mike Keneally to play some dates with his band (Bryan Beller et al) over here in the UK. It'd be cool to jam with the guys from Rush - back in school, my band could play virtually all of their songs!

I'm going through a phase of catching up with old friend right now, so if you remember me from UEA and the Tejas Club in Austin, I would absolutely love to hear from you.

Of course, if you have an interesting perspective on evidence-based medicine, please drop me a line - my day job never really stops!

hey andrew. I hear congratulations are in order - a new baby boy! Have you a name yet? Mum didn't mention one in the text. We're doing a studio recording on Thursday of most of the stuff from that concert, but heavily re-written, so no doubt it'll find its way to you at some point...

    take care,

    Matt
