About me:

Dia daoibh,Is mise Réa Giffen agus is Oifigeach Imeachtaí mé i Lárionad an Droichid i nDeisceart Bhéal Feirste. Hello all, I'm Réa Giffen and I work as Events Officer for An Droichead Irish Language and Cultural Centre in South Belfast. We have recieved numerous awards in recognition of our services in Irish Language, Culture,Arts and Education provision, not least Glór na nGaels award for best project in Ireland 2005, and again as Best in Ulster 2006. As well as featuring already established and internationally renowned artists, here at An Droichead we feel passionately about showcasing the very best of the new exciting talent from throughout the country. So if you've got the talent we'll give you a chance. We are especially interested in Traditional musicians and those that perform in their native language.

FRÉAMHATHA AN DROICHID( English version 1/2 way down). I 1992, bhunaigh pobal na Gaeilge in oirthear agus deisceart Bhéal Feirste a n-eagraíocht féin chun athbheochán na Gaeilge a bhrú chun cinn sa taobh seo tíre. Tháinig said le chéile mar ‘An Droichead’, óir is ó shean-cheantair stairiúla cois Lagain a tháinig siad – an Trá Ghearr, an Margadh, agus an Ormeau Íochtarach – áiteanna ina raibh dhá naíscoil bunaithe acu cheana féin sna hoctóidí. Bhí sé mar phríomhaidhm acu ná an Gaeloideachas a chur ar fáil dá bpáistí, agus bhunaigh siad 'Scoil An Droichid' i 1996 le múinteoir agus naíonar de pháistí. (Inniu tá 90 dalta agus cúig mhúinteoir sa bhunscoil, a shlánaigh a deichiú bliain d’aois anuraidh, agus a bhain aitheantas amach ón Bhord Oideachais sa bhliain 2001.) Ach ní sa ghaeloideachas amháin a bhí a gcuid suime - ba gaeilgeoirí samhlaíocha iad a bhí ag iarriadh todhchaí na Gaeilge ina gceantar a chinntiú trí fhorbairt seirbhísí Gaeilge don phobal. Chuige sin, thóg siad an Lárionad sa bhliain 2000, rud a raibh costas leathmhilliún puint air. Is é Lárionad An Droichid an t-aon Lárionad Gaeilge i ndeisceart agus oirthear Bhéal Feirste. Sa Lárionad faoi láthair tá dhá rang naíscoile againn atá lán (le 52 páiste iontu); tá cumann iarscoile ar siúl i rith na bliana ar a mbíonn 26 páiste ag freastal gach lá – chomh maith le liosta feithimh – ó 2.00in go dtí 5.30in le linn an scoiltéarma agus ó 10.00rn go dtí 4.30in i rith na scéimeanna saoire; tá cumann óige againn a mbíonn fíche páiste le Gaeilge ag freastal air gach Céadaoin agus Aoine; bíonn ranganna Gaeilge anseo d’fhoghlaimeoirí ag gach leibhéal comh maith le ranganna rince (seit is céilí), ranganna ealaíne, ranganna snoíodóireachta is ranganna ceoil (fidil, giotár, bodhrán agus feadóg stáin). Uair sa mhí téann an cumann siúlóide amach ag spreagadh saoil shláintiúil agus comhrá trí mheán na Gaeilge; bíonn drámaí ann sa Lárionad chomh maith le ceolchoirmeacha le ceoltóirí traidisiúnta a bhfuil clú idirnaisiúnta orthu, agus bíonn seisiúin traidisiúnta i rith na bliana. Mar sin, bíonn an lárionad in úsáid ó dhubh go dubh 6.5 lá den tseachtain i rith na bliana. ********************************* AN DROICHEAD'S ROOTS This project has its roots in the Short Strand area of East Belfast where it began in 1979 when the first Irish speaking nursery outside of the Falls Rd., Naíscoil Mhic Airt, was established. It was run from a room in a community centre until, due to conditions in Belfast at the time, we had to close. Naíonra An Mhargaidh opened in the Markets area 1988, and was able to accommodate most of the families who had children in Naíscoil Mhic Airt. We eventually settled on the Lower Ormeau area of South Belfast in a temporary building and Naíscoil An Droichid was founded at Balfour Avenue in 1992 with just 9 children. We searched the area for available land and bought a site valued at the time at £80,000 at Cooke St just a few hundred yards away. In 1995 the school, Scoil An Droichid, was established on this site and was officially opened for the 1996/97 school year. With the growth of the Irish language our number of pupils rose steadily and in 2001 we received official recognition from the Department of Education which greatly relieved An Droichead of a heavy financial burden. As we realised that the school was heading for official recognition from the Department of Education we also realised that we would need another building to carry on the other work that we had planned and we began the campaign to build the centre in which we are now. We sought and acquired funding from the Community Fund, BRO, MBW, Belfast European Partnership Board and others to the tune of approximately £500,000 and we built Larionad An Droichid which was officially opened in December 2000. We began with just the nursery and some Irish language classes in the Larionad in 2000 but in 2001 we started Cumann Iarscoile An Droichid (An Droichead’s Afterschools Club) which has been a great success. It caters for 24 children per day, attending from 2pm – 5:30pm. The afterschools club allows the parents the time to seek/do work or seek/do further education and they can be sure that their children are receiving quality affordable afterschools care in a child-centred environment. As well as the pre-school and afterschools activities we organise a wide range of language and cultural activities, classes, social events, dramas and displays. We opened a youth club in 2005, and then went on to win the Glór na nGael Trophy for the best Irish language project in the country, which was presented to us in an event in Stormont’s Great Hall in 2006. Appropriately, we were presented the award by the southern Minister for Gaeltacht and Rural affairs, Éamonn Ó Cuív, who officially opened the school for us ten years ago. An Droichead has come a long way from its humble beginnings in a temporary building with 9 children and 1 nursery teacher in 1992, and our bridge now reaches over in to County Down not only eastwards in to our home district of the Short Strand, but to the south, now taking in many families from greater South Belfast and beyond. There are now 130 children attending our school and pre-school.
Who I'd like to meet:
Hugo Chavez, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Doc Watson,Donal Lunny and Halle Berry

Hello My Friend, and our respect for your work !!!

Welcome to our list and thank you for becoming our friend!

The helpless must be protected, and those with no voice of their own must be spoken up for. Those who prey on our children rely on silence, and it must not be allowed to continue!
So thank you for adding your voice to ours, together we will grow louder...AND WE WILL BREAK THE SILENCE!!!
