The First south Belfast, Irish Culture and Traditional Music Festival***********************
Not content with being one of Belfast’s premier traditional music venues, the multi-award winning An Droichead is breaking new ground at the end of August when it hosts South Belfast’s first ever Celtic music and cultural festival.
Festival patron, comedian Des Bishop, described it as the most exciting cultural festival to hit Belfast in years.
‘Féile an Droichead 2009’ will run from 27 – 30 August and builds on An Droichead’s sensational year of events which has seen musical performances from internationally renowned artists such as Julie Fowlis, Cran, At First Light, and Liam Ó Maonlai from Hothouse Flowers.
The festival will serve up a programme of top acts including Corks own John Spillane, The Alan Kelly band, leading Scottish performer Griogáir Labhruidh, Bríd Harper, and Dermot Byrne from Altan to name but a few.
Venues along the Ormeau Road and beyond will be alive with the sound of a trad-trail, exhibitions and talks that will inform, educate and inspire. Singing workshops and music master-classes will be a must for any budding musician, and the Céilí is sure to pack in the crowds with an evening of craic agus ceol. And as if that wasn’t enough you can enjoy the tastes of the world at the multi-cultural food faire.
The City’s newest festival will cater for all tastes and guarantees a true Belfast welcome to everyone. Don’t miss it.

An Droichead is at the cutting edge in provision of the Irish language and culture.
Lárionad an Droichid is a modern, multi-award winning, purpose built, cultural centre boasting a state of the Art music and arts venue, exhibition space and community facility. The centre has full disabled access with the addition of secure parking. In 2007-08 An Droichead welcomed more than 8,000 people through its doors.
In addition to the provision of Irish language classes from beginner to advanced levels, we are widely recognised as one of Ireland’s premier traditional music venues, regularly playing host to the cream of talent from Ireland and Scotland. As an integral part of An Droichead’s events programme, we host art and craft exhibitions, lectures, and workshops in traditional arts and crafts. The workshops cover diverse traditional skills such as bog oak carving, basket making, pottery, Celtic art, Celtic jewellery making, singing, dance and traditional music skills.
The centre shares the grounds with our sister project Scoil an Droichid providing Irish Medium education for 150 children at nursery, pre-school and primary levels.

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
