Sounds LikeCome to MERIDIAN, 138 Leith Walk, Edinburgh. We run an Open Mic 8.30 - 12pm every Thursday. Come and geez a tune! It's a great wee room, with a stage and mucho ambience.

We have plenty of songwriters and original artists coming along, cover artists are most welcome too, and we'd like to encourage spoken word performers.

So give Leith a chance!

'The moon is asleep, she is blind…’

The Well play a kind of Gothic-tinged country music.

They are Mhairi O’Neil (electric violin) Mike Cameron (drums, percussion, bass, backing vocals) Chris Day (bass, mandolin, guitars, vocals) and Doug Anderson (acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin) and are fronted by singer/songwriter Andy Lang (acoustic guitar, vocals).

Influences? Dylan, Steve Earle, Springsteen, Richmond Fontaine, Nick Cave, The Handsome Family, life, love and death...

'There’s blood on all these coins, there’s here in the cup, there’s blood here on the tips of all their wings…’

In May 2006, The Well released the EP ‘Gentle –Shadow of the Sun’ featuring 2 new tracks, ‘The Well’ and ‘Gentle—Shadow of the Sun’.

In July 2004, Andy released ‘Letters to Judas’ recorded with the help of 17 musicians, including current band members, collectively known as The Zealots. The name has subsequently been dropped – ask me why over a pint!

“Letters to Judas”, their debut album, features a set of carefully understated gems that once again showcase the gritty and affecting writing that sets Lang apart. What he produces is a blend of contemporary brand roots music where shades of country, folk and blues merge to create a thoroughly rounded sound.” ROCK’N’REEL MAGAZINE, JAN 2007

TWO CDS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE:

'LETTERS TO JUDAS' - 15 TRACK ALBUM WITH 'THE ZEALOTS' - £10

'GENTLE - SHADOW OF THE SUN' - 3 TRACK CHARITY EP - £3

BOTH AVAILABLE FROM WEBSITE www.andylang.co.uk

'She passed among the yearlings

So young and unafraid

To the grave I dug with trembling hands

And there her flowers laid'

I was teaching a few songwriting courses a couple of years ago, after becoming part of the Burnsong Project, and a lot of students were saying that they had problems with inspiration when it came to lyrics. We talked about sources like current events, novels and movies and I set some homework.

I suggested thinking about a film or a novel and telling the story, or part of it, in a lyric. Or maybe just picking a character or an incident as a starting point.

Grumble grumble - 'That's too hard!' was pretty much the response, so I said ok, I'll do it too. We all had a week.

I got home and couldn't think of a damn thing!

Eventually I remembered the creepy image of the wee girl climbing out of the well in 'The Ring' and egged on by Michael Lessy's excellent 'Wisconsin Death Trip' I set about writing a murder ballad.

The result was so different to anything I'd ever written, and required the band to play in very different style to anything we'd tried before, that I decided it was kind of a new beginning.

So the band's name changed to match the song.
