Influences
My parents, and my first sax teacher, Tommy Cudley, who between them gave me a love of music. Iain Dixon, my friend for 30 years, and my longtime friends and collaborators Richard Iles and Mike Walker. My brother Phil and my sisters Liz and Catherine for introducing me to rock n' roll when I was young and impressionable! In a wider sense, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, all of the obvious saxophone ones, but mainly Johnny Hodges, Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano - all for sound and melody. Also Steely Dan, and a LOT of other rock music! Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, Rufus Wainwright - the singer/sonwriter thing really. Very fond of Delius, Vaughan-Williams, Stravinsky and currently Mahler. Much other stuff too...
Sounds Like
Probably none of the above, although Norman Wisdom taught me to do a great impersonation of a wimpering animal on the clarinet...
I'm a Saxophone player/composer/arranger. I've just moved to Berlin, Germany from Manchester, UK. I've been fortunate enough to work with some great musicians, including Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Peter Erskine, Bill Frisell, John Taylor, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Will Lee, Vince Mendoza and others.
My new CD "Another place" with pianist Les Chisnall was launched in feb 2008. You can hear some tracks on this page, or buy it from jazzcds.com.
I've recently contributed as player/arranger on Mike Walker's new album "Madhouse And The Whole Thing There".You can hear my horn arrangements on "Dad Logic" and "Owed To JC" on Mike's page.
An album of my own compositions with a six piece band featuring, amongst others, "Badbone" guitarist Johnny Heyes, is currently in production
My own projects have included a Jazz Orchestra I co-led with Richard Iles (1996-2000), and a recent special commission for Manchester Jazz Festival (2005), "A Suite For Manchester" - a piece in 6 parts, featuring pianist John Taylor.
I'm currently a member of The North West Realbook Quintet, and Tim Garland's Northern Underground Orchestra. In the past I've recorded with Creative Jazz Orchestra ("Exits and Entrances" with John Taylor and "Compositions 175 and 126" by Anthony Braxton), Richard Iles ("From Here To There"), Steve Berry ("In An Ideal World"), Neil Yates ("New Origins"), Georgina Bromilow ("Til There Was You"), Tony Faulkner's Jazz Orchestra ("Thad Jones And The Ellington Effect"), Tim Garland's Northern Underground Orch ("Due North"), Mike Walker ("Madhouse And The Whole Thing There") and Mike McGoldrick ("Wired").
I've always been interested in arranging, particularly for big bands, and more recently in composition. I've now got an outlet for both with the Andy Schofield/Jo McCallum Jazz Orchestra, a new band which aims to showcase writers from the NW UK region, as well as bring together up and coming players with this area's more high profile artists. My current six-piece band's music is also almost all original, and I've contributed arrangements to albums by Richard Iles, Mike Walker, Georgina Bromilow and Neil Fairclough, and to the BBC Big Band.
I'm also musical director of "H Gang", a Steely Dan revue.
As a teacher I was part of the Faculty of Music at Salford University for about 10 years, and have run workshoips abroad for the British Council. I've been on staff at The Music Place in Altrincham, and with Music For Life, a music service for schools in Cheshire, (for which I co-directed a Youth Jazz Orchestra, Cheshire Youth Music For Life Big Band) for the past 10 years. I'm also a course director on The Music Place Jazz Summer School, along with colleagues Iain Dixon and Mike Walker.

Evan Parker - saxophones Stephen Grew - piano Phillip Marks - percussion
An all too rare appearance in Manchester by one of the great masters of the saxophone... Evan Parker has been at the forefront of improvised and experimental music for over forty years, with a unique and innovative approach to his instrument that has been hugely influential. A master of extended techniques like circular breathing and multiphonics, he's made over 200 albums with artists like Derek Bailey, Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt, Spring Heel Jack, Michael Nyman, Spiritualized, Cecil Taylor, John Stevens, Gavin Bryars, Brotherhood of Breath, Basil Kirchin, Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, Tony Oxley, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Globe Unity Orchestra, Stan Tracey, Chris Corsano, Jah Wobble, Sainkho Namtchylak, Vic Reeves, Thurston Moore etc etc.....
He is joined by Stephen Grew on piano and Phillip Marks on percussion who have been making their own contributions to the world of adventurous improvisation for over 20 years. Those of you who saw them at last years Manchester Jazz Festival will know just how good they are...
