The wonderful Sweet Baboo played a country-tinged forty-minute one-man show to a captivated crowd at Northampton’s Legendary Labour Club.
Sweet Baboo a.k.a Stephen Black is an extremely gifted singer-songwriter who originates from Cardiff, Wales. His appearance at The Labour Club was the first off several performances aimed at promoting his new album: The Mighty Baboo, businessman records. (2008). He is a very different type of singer/ songwriter and is certainly at odds with the usual suspects of hard driven rock and roll, Dylan/Doherty inspired troubadours of folk, and the current crop of new wave alt country bands. His live set appears to draw from a diverse set of personal circumstances, which are funny, sensitive, and at times shocking. Even so, Sweet Baboo performs each song with such scale and magnitude, it leaves the listener charmed and engrossed by this exceptional entertainer. It was Northampton’s unconventional Broken Shackle Tabernacle who influenced this marvellous musical experience, and considering Sweet Baboo aka: Stephen Black was asked to play bass in Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci front man Euros Childs’ solo project, played several high profile gigs at Glastonbury and Green Man festivals, has toured Europe and America, completed recording sessions with Grammy nominated producer Mark Nevers in Nashville. And assembled a backing band for Daniel Johnston, (one of his heroes) as well as securing solo support, this was undoubtedly a high light for Northampton’s music lovers and credit to the BST for securing the services of Sweet Baboo.
