This is Andy Wilson, freelance harmonica player and multi-instrumentalist, doubling on trumpet, cajun accordion, and Irish low whistle.
My main band is "Steppin' In It", an acoustic quartet that blends blues, swing, and cajun music to the songs of singer-songwriter and frontman Josh Davis. The band is rounded out by my like-minded multi-instrumentalist twin brother, Joe Wilson, and gut-string upright bassist Dominic John.
Steppin' In It is occasionally joined by vocalist Rachel Davis in an outfit called Shout, Sister, Shout!. This group is dedicated to the music of the 30's and 40's. I'm proud to say that we have just signed with MC Records for a re-release of our debut, Hit That Jive. The re-release will feature two new bonus tracks, and 7 minutes of behind the scenes video footage via the enhanced CD format. It's official release date is April 7th, 2009.
I also play with an 8-piece jump blues band called "Those Delta Rhythm Kings". The Kings play swingin' blues from the likes of B.B. King, Louis Jordan, and Roomful of Blues. I split my time in the band with trumpet (along with the three saxophonists) and harmonica in the horn section- known collectively as "The Sofa King Horns."
On Sunday nights I host a jam session with a blues band called "Bad Gravy," which includes Rhythm Kings Johnny D Davidson and Rodney Aleshire, keyboard and accordionist Mike Lynch, drummer Johhny B Barara of Soulstice, and the soulful blues singing of Freddie Cunningham, of the band Root Doctor. We do a set and then open the stage to blues musicians and singers that come to jam, at my hometown bar, The Green Door Lounge.
Also at the Green Door, every Monday night "Steppin' In It" is joined by Mike Lynch and drummer Jon Casidy to create the 6-piece electric version of the band.
I also perform as a duo with my good friend, and roommate, Andy Brydon. Collectively known as The AA Daddies, we do a variety of honky tonk, classic rock, and blues tunes, along with whatever we might have heard on the juke box while setting up. Acoustic musicians are invited to join us on stage, or take the spotlight themselves.
I'm also in the process of returning to Michigan State University, studying trumpet in their amazing jazz studies program. I'll be doing concerts with various big bands and small combos throughout the school year.
And if you're lucky you might catch The Andy Wilson Harmonica Trio, featuring Bud Boblink on the double deck, 2 foot long chord harmonica, and Frank Warner on the mighty bass harmonica! It's a show to see!
