The Anechoic Art Ensemble is the result of the fortuitous decision to place an synthesizer lab next door to the Mössbauer Absorption Spectroscopy Lab. Result? No, not really. That’s just where the project got started, which doesn’t sound nearly as dramatic.
Most tracks were recorded using a Modular Moog, a bunch of Korg keyboards of varying model and vintage, a Prophet 600, a bunch of really crappy old samplers, a MiniMoog, some sort of rack mounted synth and Rebecca hated so much she’s repressed the memory of it, tape loops, and, in the case of the soundtracks, some licensed commercial sound effects that have fed into a variety of devices. Most projects until 2001 were recorded on a 16 track Tascam deck, mixed to DAT and mastered in a separate studio on speakers that didn’t shimmy when you pushed the consoles main volume fader up past 6. It’s nice not to worry about being crushed by a speaker cabinet while mastering. Eric, however, feels it takes some of the sport out of it.
