Born on June 3, 1983, Michael Brown was raised up in New Jersey and began writing and spitting rhymes before he ever touched the production side of music. Having a strong love for music since the age of five, Brown often turned to this passion when things would get hard. Coming up he listened to a wide span of music, ranging from the Rock guitars of Led Zeppelin all the way down to the classical assortment of Jazz musicians, including Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. His main influences, though, were those of the Soul/R&B genres, as well as the Jazz that so often speckles his current production style.
Adopting the name A New Left, a beast soon emerged from the crates. Finally finding production as a means of expression and reviving the art of crate digging, A New Left began to find the sound he wanted to create thanks to the influence of the late, great Dilla. Although he has produced tracks for local acts in both Philly and Jersey while also working on putting together an unnamed group project, A New Left agrees that it is currently more of a hobby than a career.
With the name A New Left you can expect to hear interesting things in this young man's work. His sound is akin to the soulful production of Dilla, 9th Wonder, with a little Premier and Neptunes thrown in. This brings an interesting mix of club and soul to the tracks that A New Left makes, and really brings out his ear for smooth samples and a knack for putting drum patterns together to create songs that are molded well. With smooth vocal samples dispersed throughout his tracks, A New Left covers the ground where many producers have left off, trying to find a balance between producing banging, club tracks and that one piece of smooth instrumental on which any emcee would be proud to drop sixteen bars.
