CURRENT PROJECT: THE BLACK CURTAIN
Angel Exit Theatre team up with The Brewhouse to bring you this gripping, stylish tale of one man’s struggle to speak out. The show is set in the dark underbelly of a film noir world peopled by wayward spies, a chorus of men in trench coats, greedy journalists and of course, the femme fatale. The noir landscape is at once glamorously removed and frighteningly close to the corruption of our contemporary society. In their trademark style, Angel Exit theatre use bold movement, a cracking hard-boiled script and an original electro-jazz score by Tom Ball (Headland) to bring this sordid world into relief. The show, devised by the cast and company, previewed at The Brewhouse Theatre in July 2007 and the company is currently booking a tour for spring 2008. Confirmed venues include Portsmouth New Theatre Royal, Le Preau, Normandy and The Rondo Theatre Bath. The cast includes Tamsin Fessey, Lynne Forbes, Jonathan Dunstan and David Lockwood. Formed in 2001 by graduates of the prestigious Ecole Lecoq and co-directed by Tamsin Fessey and Acushla Bastible, Angel Exit Theatre specialises in new dynamic physical theatre.
To date Angel Exit have produced three original pieces of theatre, all critically acclaimed. The first ‘Imaginary Prisons’ was a dark, twisted fairy tale, set in a Sleeping Beauty Kingdom under a mad dictatorship. It played to sold-out audiences in the atmospheric Underbelly venue at the 2001 Edinburgh fringe where it was nominated for a fringe first award and was hailed a “devised work of rare brilliance” (The Scotsman). Angel Exit went on to create “Bolt Upright’, an Irish ghost story told by a gang of buffoon fairies and set in the aftermath of the Irish famine. ‘Bolt Upright’ toured Ireland and the U.S and was nominated for the best production award in the 2003 Dublin festival. ‘Master Shuttlefate’ was the company’s most recent show, and with a cast of 12 was something of an epic affair. It played at the 2005 Dublin fringe where critics likened the story of Master Shuttlefate’s stay in a detention centre to the “equally baffling nightmare world of hope and hypocrisy” of Kafka (Irish Theatre Magazine).
Three very different stories but what the shows all have in common is a strong emphasis on storytelling through physical ensemble theatre, using the European traditions of clown, chorus, melodrama and buffoonery. Lyn Gardner has said of the company’s work “Angel Exit…is weaving stories with more than a little theatrical magic…There is so much vivid theatricality and inventiveness at work here.” Gerry Colgan of The Irish Times speaks of our “Reputation for excellence in physical theatre”.
Angel Exit are currently working on a new piece of theatre "The Black Curtain" which premiered at the Brewhouse in Taunton in July and will be touring in Spring 2008.
Reviews for The Black Curtain:
"film noir is interpreted physically, and to spectacular effect ... innovative and well-imagined physical theatre"
British Theatre Guide
"the actors slide from scene to scene with precise choreography ... the piece is more than just an homage, with a critical finger pointed at not just over-vigilant governments, but also a complicit media"
