ja hhow much am i worth? y i have a fertile wound from which can be delivered the chill of my other significance i will hold it to my beast and know that i have been immaculated and o what sorrows born shall i carry as myself, i cannot expect others to carry which is mine nor trust therein with the faith required to do so and above all we must survive all of us and more to come even as we are a misery first, second “This reindeer come for the last time’ their state of consciousness is hostile they have forgotten that they are all connected to everything they are irresponsible with their consiousness shows how states of consciousness can interact when brought into contact with one another hostility creates necessity for hostility similar to Ghost Dance: one state of consciousness oppressing others necessary hostility white buffalo white reindeer “slender antelope” all same consciousness, responsible for other people’s consciousness mountain ridge- one falls, all fall one falls, another almost falls just watching him as if connected later, all fall one is dangling cuts rope but why is freedom a goal why is subservience bad? we are first introduced to the idea of freedom vs. subservience in the context of hinderence. Hinderence is bad, and therefore we say subservience is bad, because it allows for hinderence but what we really want to get rid of is hinderence but hinderence of what? it is implied neccessarily that we are trying to do something; there must be something for it to be a hinderence to. (ex. bacteria &plants &humans) [!! it is subjective !!] And what does ivan mean when he says he wants freedom? is freedom something that exists in some sort of ultimate form that one can 'have'? one must be free of something- see hinderence with free will comes, intrinsically, an element of control, and therefore subservience by having the ability to decide, we are constantly controlling ourselves. There is, in each person's existence, a chain of subservience. Consider, for instance, someone who whishes to be overcome by a trance state or euphoria, and does so through meditation. upon doing so, the person becomes subservient to the trance, or to whatever causes the trance. but is this person really 'not free?' Have they become a slave? Are they being exploited? The person has, whith knowedge of his ability to choose for himself, decided to enter the trance because he likes the trance and likes doing so. therefore, the controlling element (entrancement) really becomes somewhat subservient to him. and so they are subservient to each other. in doing so, however, he has not rid himself of the element of brainwashing, but rather has made himself such that the element of brainwashing influences his ideals. the element of brainwashing happiness --> submission ---> loss of self and this is what ivan really fears, that through the loss of control over his actions, ideals, thoughts, and feelings, he will loose his personal, individual identity. This, however, is only important to him because he has been brainwashed into thinking that it is somehow intrisically important. In reality, however, it is essentially his fear of control that makes him a slave to things that make him suffer. personal existence is something that we are born into; we do not neccesarily want it people are not satisfied with normal life the problem is the existence of suffering we experience suffering by way of our personal existence if we can rid ourselves of our personal existence, we will not suffer thus, the problem will be solved everything that can be a problem can be reduced to suffering thus, if the problem of suffering is solved, there are no problems, and whatever is left is perfect. thus, we should, we yearn to, free ourselves from our existence as a self we cannot know or at least claim to understand anything that is objective; we exist and are subjective, and thus can only know things subjectively what we call 'real' is what we experience. this applies to things 'directly' experienced and things observed we consider things that are obesrved important only because we observe them if we could not observe them in some way, we could not say they were real, in fact they would never occur to us. the one thing that we know is 'real,' above all other things is the existence of experience thus, experience and existence are the most fundamentally important things it is second to the existence of experience that we can say we know that our experience exists, because we are only reasonably certain that the experience is ours. it can be put this way look in front of you, what are you sure you see? you might say that you can see familiar objects, but this is most uncertain, as you may be mistaken in your recognition therof you might say that you can see certain objects, but this is only slightly less uncertain, as you might not truely know what those objects are, and those objects might not be certain or particular at all; in fact, they might come to display behaviors and characteristics completely unpredictable to you. you might say, then, that at least you see the outside world. But even this is uncertain, as it is impossible to say definately that there is a world 'outside', or any sort of 'externality' as we might often imagine there to be. what you can say, however, with reasonable certainty, is that you are seeing your field of vision. this, then, is really the only thing that you can ever claim to observe visually the same applies for any other sense. There is one thing, however, that one knows one can confirm at any point, and in any situation. One always knows that that one most fundamental existence of experience exists and is present, even more so than that onesself and one's personal experience is present. That fundamental existence of experience, then, is the one thing that could create our experience, and is therefore the one thing that we must appeal to in our criteria for things that are to avoided/sought out; and thus, also for our own embetterment. suffering is an experience that is all that is known about suffering it is commonly believed that nobody can ever find joy in suffering- however, this is uncertain it is subsequently commonly believed that suffering is a problem and therefore should be avoided by this point, however, one has drifted a significant distance from the one thing that is known. therefore, it is not neccessarily important that we flee our experience in order to escape what we see as suffering -experience is what we have; it is what we have to be. Experiences, or things that effect experience, are what we have that we can use our experience on. it is thus that we live, and it is thus that we exist. we sometimes suffer, we sometimes do not what causes us to suffer, therefore, is not experience, but some thing that effects experience that that thing effecting our experience in that particular way should always cause suffering is unkown therefore, that what we recognize as suffering cannot bring us joy is uncertain furthermore, that things we do not enjoy, or things we detest, should be avoided, is still somewhat uncertain That the goal of human existence is to escape suffering is likewise uncertain. One could just as easily look at the situation and say that it is not that we do not want to suffer, it is that we want to experience joy the buddhist ideal of selflessness is, however, in other ways, very similar to the jewish ideal of oneness with God. at first, they seem to be direct opposites, and, in fact, for the most part, they are. Buddhists strive to reach 'nirvana,' the ultimate in selflessness, the complete lack of being as a restricted, individual awarenes; one has no ideas, no thoughts, no feelings; in fact, it could be said that one is not. Jews, on the other hand, strive towards a 'oneness with god.' In the jewish view, God is everything, including nothingness, over all time (but atemporally, as god includes time) and is the one thing that contains all other things. To be one with god is to experience god as one experiences onesself; that is to experience all things, over all time, including time itself; in essence, the ultimate experience. The seemingly obvious difference here, however, become increasingly more ambiguous upon closer inspection. One surely cannot become god, on one's own, by simply making himself more and more godlike. If he were to try to do this, he could only ever be creating greater, or at least more, things for god to be inclusive of, as god is inclusive of the individual, and therefore could never succeed. the key, then is that a person cannot try to be at one with god while still being himself. Once this is realized, the difference between the two religious quests becomes almost unintelligable. A thing or a place is holy if it makes you think or feel something that is significant to you Thus holy places or things can be ‘gateways’ into the ‘world of the sacred,’ or in other words, that places that are holy trigger in one the sense of sacredness, that this sense may be found, and thus that it can be recognized in all other places. Another way of phrasing this would be that a person, upon being instilled with the ability to feel certain emotions bring them closer to god, can cultivate that ability, and learn to perceive and react to everything on a sacred level, which brings the person closer to achieving oneness. To be mindful is to perceive each and every thing as being of the utmost and most amazing significance. If one does this, one will begin to understand the nature and individual things and things in the larger scale. Using the concept of inter-being, through mindfulness, then, one can also understand the nature of nothingness, and become closer to achieving nirvana Essentially, mindfulness is the art or practice of making things holy. Is this holy ground? Of course it is. Because it is within Buddha’s view Because it is within God And we all know about the spine of God… there can be seen, as well, a consistant drive to eliminate, somewhat systematically, all attributes fundamentally considered intrinsic to human experience. Children born into our electronically mediated world of computer and television monitors might best be called "screenagers." While the members of every generation experience some degree of tension with their own children, today's screenagers have been forced to adapt to such an extent that many of their behaviors are inscrutable to their elders. We feel threatened by how different they have become. Indeed, screenagers appear to be interacting with their world in interacting with his world in ways that are as dramatically altered from their grandfather's experience as the first winged creature from their earthbound forebears. What's more, this intensity of evolutionary change shows no signs of slowing down. What we need to adapt to, more than any particular change, is the fact that we are changing so rapidly. Following the Tibetan model then, we distinguish three phases of the psychedelic experience. The first period (Chikhai Bardo) is that of complete transcendence - beyond words, beyond space-time, beyond self. There are no visions, no sense of self, no thoughts. There are only pure awareness and ecstatic freedom from all game (and biological) involvements. ["Games" are behavioral sequences defined by roles, rules, rituals, goals, strategies, values, language, characteristic space-time locations and characteristic patterns of movement. Any behavior not having these nine features is non- game: this includes physiological reflexes, spontaneous play, and transcendent awareness.] The second lengthy period involves self, or external game reality (Chonyid Bardo) - in sharp exquisite clarity or in the form of hallucinations (karmic apparitions). The final period (Sidpa Bardo) involves the return to routine game reality and the self. For most persons the second (aesthetic or hallucinatory) stage is the longest. For the initiated the first stage of illumination lasts longer. For the unprepared, the heavy game players, those who anxiously cling to their egos, and for those who take the drug in a non-supportive setting, the struggle to regain reality begins early and usually lasts to the end of their session."Liberation in this context does not necessarily imply (especially in the case of the average person) the Liberation of Nirvana, but chiefly a liberation of the 'life-flux' from the ego, in such a manner as will afford the greatest possible consciousness and consequent happy rebirth. Yet for the very experienced and very highly efficient person, the [same] esoteric process of Transference [Readers interested in a more detailed discussion of the process of "Transference" are referred to Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines, edited by W. Y. Evans-Wentz, Oxford University Press, 1958.] can be, according to the lama-gurus, so employed as to prevent any break in the flow of the stream of consciousness, from the moment of the ego-loss to the moment of a conscious rebirth (eight hours later). Judging from the translation made by the late Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup, of an old Tibetan manuscript containing practical directions for ego-loss states, the ability to maintain a non-game ecstasy throughout the entire experience is possessed only by persons trained in mental concentration, or one- pointedness of mind, to such a high degree of proficiency as to be able to control all the mental functions and to shut out the distractions of the outside world. If our ego has lost contact with the Self, unsettling feelings of alienation arise within- a meaninglessness, perhaps depression, the sense of being adrift, without direction or hope- feelings that seem so frequently to characterize contemporary lives. On the other hand, if our ego has become to closely connected to the Self, arrogating ourselves the endless possibilities and dynamic power of this larger psychic Self, the result is what Jung termed inflation, a sense of exhibitionistic grandiosity, an unrealistic view of oneself as omnipotent, omniscient, unassailable. This is the ego of those well-known cultural figures the egomaniac and the egotist. If momentary brain states could be found to correlate with the accuracy of discrete psi responses, progress could be made in predicting which particular psi responses (eg. Guesses on a card test) will prove to be correct. Third, attempts could be made through biofeedback, drugs, or other means to alter the functioning of this part of the brain to enhance psi performanceThe earliest example of an exploration of the relation between subjective paranormal experiences (SPEs) and the temporal lobes is an uncontrolled study by Nelson(1970), who found that 10 of 12 trance mediums had evidence of temporal lobe instability in their electroencephalographic (EEG) readings. Subsequently, Nelson and Neppe (1980) failed to replicate these EEG findings in the population from the South African Society for Psychical Research (SASPR) studied by Neppe… Roll (1977) suggested a link between epilepsy and poltergeist activity, based on the fact that 22 of 92 persons regarded as the foci of such activity that he surveyed were prone to “seizures or dissociative states” (p. 400). In one particularly noteworthy case (Solfvin & Roll, 1976), poltergeist outbursts appeared to alternate with seizures in a grand mal epileptic.” “The first controlled study to investigate the relationship between temporal lobe instability and SPEs was by Neppe (1979, 1980, 1981b, 1982, 1983d), who analyzed the SPEs reported by all members of the SASPR. He found that a core group of six members reported large numbers of SPEs according to prestipulated criteria. These persons had significantly more possible temporal lobe symptoms than a group of six control members from the same society who reported no SPEs. Data were collected from interviews and detailed qquestionnaires… The findings demonstrated a link of temporal lobe functioning to SPEs at both a state and a trait level and also suggested a link of seizure-type phenomena with these experiences. The 60 patients assigned to the TLD group had a mean SPE score of 3.05 (SD=2.69). The 27 patients in the control group had a mean SPE score of 1.93 (SD=1.90). The difference is marginally significant by the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test (U= 1.021, p=.049, one-tailed). Thus the TLD hypothesis is confirmedThe authors tested whether participants (N=4) could tell who was calling before answering the telephone. In each trial, participants had 4 potential callers, one of whom was selected at random by the experimenter. Participants were filmed on time-coded videotape throughout the experimental period. When the telephone began ringing, the participants said to the camera whom they thought the caller was and, in many cases, also how confident they felt in their guesses. The callers were usually several miles away, and in some cases thousands of miles away. By guessing at random, there was a 25% chance of success. In a total of 271 trials, there were 122 (45%) correct guesses (p=1x10^[illegible]). The 95% confidence limits of this success rate were from 39% to 51%. In most trials, some of the callers were familiar to the participants and others were unfamiliar. With familiar callers there was a success rate of 61% (n=100; p=[illegible]). With unfamiliar callers the success rate of 20% was not significantly different from chance. When they said they were confident about their guesses, participants were indeed more successful than when they were not confidenradiohead& bad enigmas no more left wondering if we could be together for some sort of film that we could make of life like we were movie stars playing the part of real people by whose story everyone is inspired i wonder if this movie exists i wonder if you're in it somewhere on a train i see the light you're in the shot you idiot youll never work in this town again the beauty is accentuated though, i felt like that, i think youre right we have a long future together its like a halo this movie will be brilliant if it revolves around this one thing one shot for a lifetime one lifetime of many if i live that longwe look to find meaning in mythology in poetry in ourselves and in our looking and poetry in meaning and and by mythology and in our finding our selves today just as ever desire and need a reason an excuse because of which we live He looked at her, his heart begginning to pick up its pace, and the blood became heavier in his chest. “I just mean that socially, because of social conceptions, people are treated differently based on things like that, so they grow up differently, you know- I mean- I’m not trying to be racist, I’m just saying that I mean, people- other people, are racist, and that effects people’s lives,” he would say, and she would respond, “So you’re saying that black people are different than white people,” and he would reply “Well yes, but-“ and be interrupted, “But you’re not being racist.” “No, I’m not” he would say, but he didn’t. Instead, he just let the blood pump to his head and release itself through his breath, as he exhaled, as one would under a heavy load, and sat there, in what one could perhaps not call remorse as much as lamentation, wondering why God had stricken the two of them with such different thinking processes, and why she would not understand that he was just trying to make a technical point about her question, and how it was invalid, and why she would never be able to understand the logic he was laying out, and indeed how this was perhaps a sort of sacrifice he had to make, to enjoy the comfort of her feminine abilities to emote, as a good mother, a good wife, and why he loved her. And she turned then, as if she could hear him, in his breath, and looked at him, under his heavy neck, breathing like that, and wondered how she had come to live, to live in that house; to live with herself. She looked at him with her doll face, eyes held up buoyantly and glazed like glass, her head tilted to support the spatial ambiance of the mental state held within, like a camera, or perhaps a picture, just outside her field of vision, behind her eyes, pointed at him in demonstration. And she went back, then, to playing resigningly, with some small trinket he had let her buy, on which she focused now, as a mandala, in reflection, because she could think of nothing more to say. "What luck for rulers that men do not think." I would like to ask those people to read the recent legislature, and statistics regarding the amount of prison time given to 'marijuana offenders' under current US Federal and state laws, not to mention the specifically relevant May 2006 case in which the Joint Terrorism Task Force was deployed to respond to the 'biochemical weapons "of mass distruction" threat' that was apparently posed by a couple of muffins containing marijuana at a school (the Joint Terrorism Task Force has demanded that the student who brought the muffins to school be charged as a bio-terrorist, even after the substance in the muffins was identified as marijuana). Remember this: your liberties are precious, they are to be guarded even at the expense of the wellbeing of a few individuals, and it is in deed your responsability to protect them because they are not only yours; there may be no way of knowing who the next marijuana bio-terrorist may be- it may not be you, it may not even be someone you know, it will be someone, and that someone deserves the kind of honesty and civil liberties that the constitution is meant to protect. The state of affairs of your government may have been deteriorating for some time now, but that is no excuse for it to continue. There are very few humans left these days. Humans, with their understanding of experience segmented off from their understanding of information, the ‘natural’ separate from the contrived, are currently being eliminated by natural selection. In one case, a woman patient was raped after UN employees locked her in a room with a male patient because they wanted to "calm her down", while employees who observed another rape in a hallway said they did not intervene because the victim "must have asked for it", according to the independent campaigning group Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI), which produced the report. "This is a pervasive pattern of serious abuses. The rule of law simply does not apply within these psychiatric facilities," Dr Eric Rosenthal, MDRI's founder, said yesterday. "We found extreme, inhuman and degrading treatment, arbitrary detention and the physical and sexual assault of women, and we received a blanket denial from the authorities." Dr Robert Okin, chief psychiatrist at San Francisco's biggest hospital and one of the report's authors, said the UN had "disregarded its own standards for the protection and treatment of the mentally disabled and turned a blind eye to the evidence" at Kosovo's two mental institutions - the Shtime home, which houses 285 patients 19 miles south of Pristina, and the Pristina elderly home - and the Pristina University hospital. In the course of the two-year study, investigators at Shtime reported finding patients sleeping on concrete floors amid piles of human excrement, or in soiled sheets, and spending their days in apathy, sometimes without clothing, and often with nothing to do. They were given out-of-date psychotropic drugs with no monitoring by experts, because there is no psychiatrist on staff. In further reports of sexual assault, male patients were allowed to roam the women's wards at night making what one Red Cross worker called "voluntary or involuntary girlfriends". Kosovo's director of psychiatric institutions told MDRI he did not have the money available to fit a secure door to protect the women's wards, even though funds were available for refurbishment elsewhere in the facility, the group said. An official at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (Unmik), which holds overarching responsibility for the government of the former Yugoslav province, admitted the report was "not generally inaccurate". The campaigners condemned the UN for continuing to fund refurbishment of the institutions instead of integrating the patients into community care programmes, but the official said money was not available for such initiatives. In addition, the patients were mostly ethnic Serbs, while the surrounding community was mostly ethnic Albanian, and the patients might be "abused or killed" if released. "This is not in any way to excuse the bad circumstances in the institutions, but it's not like New York or California." But the official agreed that many ethnic Albanian staff had "not been trained and probably [were] not very sympathetic" to the patients. Another UN official said the organisation intended to "explore and examine" individual allegations, but money might prevent it. "The question is, do we have the resources that are sufficient to follow the recommendations in the report?" the official said. Later, in a statement, Unmik said: "We are in the process of developing special programmes to alert nurses and staff to the issue," adding that "children have been removed from the institution at Shtime and are no longer vulnerable". But "to build up a structure and mechanisms to deal with this phenomenon at the local level... takes time". Dr Rosenthal said that patients had been warned by staff to keep quiet. "If you say anything bad about the staff, God will kill you," a nurse was reported as telling a patient in front of an MDRI investigator at Pristina University hospital. Two former patients there, along with a physician working for another organisation, were also threatened by a staff member to prevent them revealing that the staff member had had sexual relationships with the two patients, the report said. Furthermore, "when women have been diagnosed as mentally ill, they are no longer credible as witnesses to the abuse", said Laura Prescott, one of the report's authors and president of Sister Witness International, a US organisation founded by formerly institutionalised women. Dr Okin said UN bureaucracy prevented the organisation from hiring a foreign psychiatrist. There were no psychiatrists at Shtime because "the UN is strangled by its own version of a civil service bureaucracy: its pay classification system is such that it won't allow itself to pay for a psychiatrist", he said. The report, funded by the Open Society Institute with money from financier George Soros, was endorsed by the most respected human rights organisation in the US yesterday. Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, called it "profoundly important... the horrors it describes are undeniable"PAR CE SIGNE TU LE VAINCRAS (BY THIS SIGN YOU WILL CONQUER HIM) Crowning the baptismal font supported by demon Asmodeus that greets visitors to the church are four angels, each of which makes a gesture with their right hand that is indicative of the Roman Catholic ‘Sign of the Cross.’ However, upon closer inspection we can see that the top angel’s left hand rests upon its breast with the right hand positioned on the top of its head, a clue that the sign in question is not the traditional cross but is, instead, a symbol that is familiar to all occultists and one that is most despised by the church, namely a pentagram. During the Middle Ages the pentacle acted as a password of sorts, being a sign of recognition to members of the ‘invisible college’ or those who pursued the forbidden knowledge of the sciences despite the inherent dangers of doing so at a time when such academic interests as mathematics and astronomy were deemed by the Inquisition to be synonymous with black magic and sorcery and were punishable by death by being burned alive. But why did these men choose the pentagram as there ‘password?’ As well as exemplifying the Golden Ratio, the pentagram is featured in a little-known astronomical phenomenon. By mapping the position of Venus when occulted by the sun, the planet inscribes an immense pentagram within the zodiac over the course of eight years. (NOTE: 8 and 5 [as in the 5 points or angles of the pentagram] are also part of the Fibonacci sequence). In that Venus (the bright morning star, i.e. Lucifer or the Light-bearer) is the only planet in the solar system that traces such a precise geometrical pattern, the sign was adopted by the ancient Magi (Mesopotamian astronomers) as well as other adepts who studied and recorded the motions of celestial bodies. With this in mind, what exactly was the enigmatic priest trying to tell us when he erected the statuary group in the doorway? The answer may lie in one of the coded parchments (parchment one) allegedly discovered by Sauniere inside a hollow pillar that once supported the ancient altar. By connecting certain controlling devices embedded in the Latin text a similar pentagram can be drawn. This, itself, maybe a clue to the whereabouts of a much larger pentagram laid out over the landscape in the region. One that mirrors the celestial Venusian pentacle, reminding us of that favorite phrase of the alchemists, "As above, so Below." It has been suggested by many researchers that the alignments of the pentagonal geometry overlaying the Rennes valley contains the key by which one may unlock a great secret. Now let us recall the inscription of the statuary group: BY THIS SIGN YOU WILL CONQUER HIM Does this mean that with the lost knowledge of the ancients we can conquer the darkness of ignorance as represented by the hideous, deformed demon? Or, since Asmodeus is believed to be the keeper of secrets and guardian of treasures, in particular that of King Solomon, is Sauniere telling us that discovering the pentagonal geometry in the area is the first step in locating a legendary treasure hidden there, whether material or spiritual? * Of further interest to those students of Thelemic occultism is the notion that Sauniere attended a Martinist Lodge in Lyon and may have traveled in the same esoteric circles as those initiated into the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, the French OTO, and Gnostic Church. All of these were quasi-Masonic Orders whose rituals of the higher degrees involved sacred sexuality (i.e. a western version of tantra) with the various elixirs produced being the preferred sacrament (see OTO Rituals and Sex Magick by Reuss and Crowley). In the light of these new revelations, there may be an overriding sexual component in the symbology encoded in the statuary group. A tantric formula concerning the nature of baptism by true Holy Water which the angels have dipped their fingers into prior to making the sign of the Venusian pentagram. there are two types of attentional control mechanisms- the basic linear processing feedback loop, and the thalamicortical amplification method. 1- the basic feedback loop most neurons in the brain are relatively simple information processing devices, signals are gathered in the dendrite, are summed by the soma, and are either discontinued or are passed on to the next neuron by the axon. the things we think of as 'thoughts' are not generally the workings of a single neuron, but rather the processing of a signal throughout a relatively small group of neurons. in this respect, we can, at least for now, look at the neuron as a simple bit of wire with some type of diode in the middle. It takes many of these little bits of wire, however, to create a circuit, and a signal travels from one bit to the next at an increadible speed. Thus, in order to create the maintained activation of a group of neurons, such that one would even have time to use it's 'thought' or overall bit of information to have any sort of significant effect on other 'thoughts-' that is, to manipulate the processing of other bits of information, one must create a temporary feedback loop,or establish a closed circuit. This is done by the prefrontal cortex (PFC). All sensory areas of the brain report in one way or another to the PFC, so it has a pretty good idea of what's going on throughout your brain. Via the PFC, areas of the brain responsible for emotional reactions to sensations can not only be connected to areas responsible for outward control of the body, but can also be used to decide what things are or aren't worth bearing in mind. Thus, the PFC, using judgements sent by emotional centers, can carry out executive organizational fuctions, and keep certain thoughts going for some prolonged period of time, by some clever neural networking. basic feedback loops are easier to understand than TA, but using them for neuromancy in requires in depth psychological evaluation prior to action thereupon, or a complete and utter lack of dignity, and thus we will not go into the grisley details of all the different ways you can use them right now. An example of neural loop hacking at work is as follows: 2- Thalamicortical Amplification when we spoke before of the neuron as a simple information processing device, we were careful to use the wording "most neurons". here's why: the neurons of the cortex- the outer layer of the brain in which higher-level cognition takes place- are very special. Not only do they have normal (basal) dendrites and an axon - the regular in's and out's that carry signals from one neuron to the next - but they have an extra dendrite, called an apical dendrite, that extends straight up (or out depending on how you look at it) from the soma. Instead of being connected to a preceeding neuron, these apical dendrites are set up to recieve input from the thalamus. This doesn't seem so odd until you consider that this means that while each neuron of the cortex is connected to the next, and are almost all (postulatively) somehow interrelated indirectley, they are all connected to the thalamus via their apical dendrite. This does not mean, however, that the thalamus can arbitrarily activate neurons whenever it wants- it's method of control is more subtle, yet at the same time much more significant and easily workable (at least while remaining somewhat discrete) than that of other attentional control center. The reason TC attention is more subtle is as follows: the activation of the apical dendrite alone does not produce a strong enough signal to cause the axon to fire. Instead it is used to amplify or modulate the signal reaching the neuron. while most signals are sent only once, in a manner analogous to binary code, TC attentional signals are sent to the apical dendrite in such a manner as to create standing waves, which can be maintained for a sustained period of time. While various possible functions of these standing waves are still hypothetical, one thing is obvious, and is more certainly backed up by experimental .. The presence of these standing waves, though not enough to cause the axon to fire, do add to the overall strength of the signal reaching the neuron, therefore increasing the chances of the neuron reaching action potential- the signal strength needed to cause the axon to fire. The reason TC attention is so important is that it creates what we would think of as 'concious attention'- which, in essence, describes consciousness itself. and so, in controlling TC attention we can control the subject's conscious mind, but what's actually more important is that likewise, by controlling the subject's conscious mind we can control the subject's TC attentional systems breathe it seems someone has survived here everything is brilliant calm you beautiful eyes so human my angel i will cry for you and though still there will be sorrow we will be there to put it in its place no where (utopia) near us and to see what beautiful scenery such ruble makes so human once again .To walk along this laser path Straight as an arrow, leading me home Space dilates time grows narrow Thins as my hair and nails still grow Spiraling over me, where do I go This winding life Is not for free This tight rope of light Preceeding me The good book weighs my purity It smells of reefer and gasoline The good lord.. His hand breaks through the crimson rain Through blood and skullADderall As the seasons change, and the days become shorter, the air is dry and fresh, and as it so happens, I sit on the forefront of human understanding, gazing out upon the multitudes of flesh as they march to and fro. Slowly but surely, the army of scientists and doctors are opening the musty tombs of knowledge hidden away and sealed by the ancient origins of humanity. sri The ability for the brain to heal itself, the effects of electromagnetic stimulation helms on our own nexus of electrochemical grey matter, and the barriers of standard physics crumbling beneath the quanta. he said i was just a child then now im only a man How foolish men are to have spent so much energy only to realize what i have known for so long. The begining of an end, the final realization many miles away from the grasp of science, but close enough for any humble man to taste. By default or by accident maybe, but surely it is time to begin preparation. May we receive god's gift, swiftly and painfully, and release into the unknown depths of the space between two points, the end of human suffering, the cleansing of the flesh, and ascension to the holy of holies, two becomes one, and one becomes all. Maybe i am wrong, and i will live my life only to die as the rest, only to wait upon another vessel to take the weight of the cross upon his shoulders and finish what we have started. but tell me at least this much, tell me my friend that i am not insane, that my struggle with god is not in vain! Within my chest beats two hearts, one of flesh, one of spirit, with every pulse they meet and threaten my very existence. This is all for now, but do try to hear me, it is the most important thing in the universe. O 1. ..sometimes you can cometo understand something onlyby understandingsomething else andrelatingit ‘ .. ..2. .. | .. “Information is like a bank; our job is to rob that bank.” -Genesis P. Orridge In his book, Earth in Mind, David Orr comments, in relation to the advancement of technology, that "Our needs, in short, are those of the spirit; yet, our imagination and creativity are overwhelmingly aimed at things that as often as not degrade spirit and nature." But on what grounds can he assert such a thing? We tend to consider the operations of a computer intrinsically cold and completely separate from those which we know as effecting and defining ‘actual life.’ But who is to say that the powers of the computer are in some way defaultly base? Consider, for instance, a program called the Hypnogenic screen saver, which produces mandalic images capable of directly effecting the human mind by actually inducing hypnotic trance states. This is something that was made by computers, a current development of technology, that interacts with the individual person on the same level as does meditation. The psycho-spiritual powers of machinery is not, however, and entirely new concept. The physicist J.D. Berna's book published in 1929 called The World, The Flesh and The Devil decided that the numerous limitations of the human body could be overcome only by the use of mechanical attachments or substitutes until eventually all that might be left of man's original organic body would be the brain. The word "cyborg" (cybernetic organism) devised by Dr. Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline, define a cyborg as "An exogenously extended organizational complex, functioning as a homeostatic system". The Italian anatomist Luigi Galvani discovered in 1786 that electricity was one of the essential secrets of life. This discovery galvanized society, and its future applications are only just beginning to be envisaged. Its infiltration and uses are beyond calculation, its symbiosis presently is even greater than before as technology increases the use of electricity becomes even more fundamental to the workings of machines. Machines are natural. Everything around you- the movement of atoms through the air, the falling of rocks upon a hill, the movements of populations of animals and other objects, can is a manifestation of the phenomenon of cause and effect, or stimulus/response. The only thing that separates machine functionality from all other stimulus/response is the subjective stance of human desire present to dictate 'purpose'. A lever lifting a latch is just as natural as a twig snapping under a rolling rock; the lever is essentially just an occurrence of the same phenomenon manifesting itself in a way that happens to please a certain human somewhere. The human mind, likewise, functions at least by referencing the activities of the brain. The brain is essentially a complex information processing structure. Information enters the dendrites, is filtered through the cpu of the neuron, and is sent out through the axon. All cognition occurs this way. Cognition, then, is a thoroughly 'mechanical' process, done by a machine. The only thing that separates man from his environment is that he is consciously aware of himself as experiencing the cognition that occurs within a single body. And who knows, even that confinement might change in a few years. Even if our cognitive processes do not completely encompass the range of components necessary for conscious experience, it must be understood that at least all ranges of human experience familiar enough to modern man to be encompassed in any view of education are based entirely in cognition (indeed, there would seem to be little else to be aware of) , and, therefore, in information processing It has long been held that the human mind processes information in the same manner as a computer. This is not true; each neuron of the human brain is capable of information processing on a level almost as sophisticated as that of a simple computer. Each of the most miniscule functional portions of the brain contains the processing capabilities at least on par with the common PC. The human brain, then, it its entirety, is more akin to a computer network. Education, then, is nothing more than the transference of information from external sources to the individual; downloading. “the information-giving function of schools was rendered obsolete a long time ago” Neil Postman says, in his essay ‘of luddites, learning, and life,’ “We would all be clearer about what we were getting into if there were less cheerleading about, let us say, the use of computers in the classroom and more sober analysis of what may its costs intellectually and socially.” The internet breeds a more non-commercial, non-'technological', non-linear, view of the world in which people have begun to value the substance of their own experience over even the colossal imperatives of logistic moral progress built up by centuries of western tradition. Hacking is an example of this phenomenon. Many hackers (those who have been caught) have had to face trial by the U.S. government, and by society, both of which are run almost exclusively by adults schooled as per western tradition. Thus, they have had to devise cover motives, excuses, if you will, to make their actions seem as socially acceptable as possible, which is how we, as a society, have developed the new concept of hacking for demonstrative or destructive purposes. The idea behind 'true hacking' is to sneak in and out of a 'secured' information system without changing anything and without being noticed. the motive: enjoyment. Parents and teachers worry that their children aren't learning properly because they can't understand them. We come to understand the world around us through education- learning about the world, and, once we become more independent, learning about learning. Thus, the way we learn defines the way we perceive reality Adults today cannot understand their children because they cannot understand the way their children learn. Adults today grew up in a time when learning meant research, and research meant reading books. Books are written linearly, and thus can be learned from, and can only teach, a linearly progressive view of reality. The internet is not linear. It doesn't even have a center. It is, instead, perhaps the most non-linear system of organizing information that man has yet implemented the internet helps us to utilize our potential capacity for thought to its fullest extent. Everyone 'thinks nonlinearly’, as the brain is a 'neural network' a system of parallel processors. Clynes points out an understanding of the nature of our thoughts in terms of their mathematical, electronic and time-space identities which will permit us to communicate better than we do at the present time, we may find new shapes and discover means of utilizing them to communicate in entirely new ways. Many people erroneously consider the internet a 'library,' as that is the thing in the world of their adult past that it most closely resembles: a bunch of information organized in small chunks by different people. From this perspective, much of the information on the internet, being held to the standard of a book in a library, is biased, largely inaccurate, and generally 'not worth taking out'. It is wiser, however, to consider the internet to be one giant book, dense with extensive quotations and footnotes. From this perspective, the internet is perhaps the most solidly supported body of text in existence. Much of the body of the text, however is communicated in purely postmodern devices; the suggestive placement of a hyperlink, the telling context or filetype of an expression, things that the adult population, for the most part, cannot read. In his essay Of Luddites, Learning, and Life, Neil Postman makes the valid point that, “School has never been about individualized learning. It has always been about how to learn and how to behave as part of a community.” Postman argues that classical schooling is necessary because it has the ability, “to teach children how to behave in groups,” but what doesn’t realize is that the group is changing. Teaching children social standards is only important assuming that they are the standards that society is going to hold them to. Thus, should the society become a more technologically, information-based one, as it would be if we let ourselves teach our children to be as such, there would be no problem with children learning the social etiquette of an internet community. That society itself is changing in this fashion is an inevitable observation. We have, after all introduced a whole new force for society to appease. What is being introduced into society now is the relationship between people and their machines, to be developed just as relationships between people themselves have been. That said, it must be acknowledged that we are on the brink of a new community. This new community is one that centers around both the development of the individual human mind as the priority of its individual humans, and the integration of the individual mind with the structure of society. What we are seeing arise now can, if we let it, become the gateway to a strengthening of the bond between the individual and his environment, between man and machine.

"Hansel and Gretel are alive and well
And they're living in Berlin
She is a cocktail waitress
He had a part in a Fassbinder film
And they sit around at night now
drinking schnapps and gin
And she says: Hansel, you're really bringing me down
And he says: Gretel, yu can really be a bitch
He says: I've wated my life on our stupid legend
When my one and only love
was the wicked witch.

She said: What is his story?
And he said: History is an angel
being blown backwards
into the future
He said: History is a pile of debris
And the angel wants to go back
and fix things
To repair the things that have been broken
But there is a storm
blowing from Pattern
And the storm keeps blowing the angel
backwards
into the future
And this storm, this storm
is called
Progress"

A poem for your day:
.
.
My Friend

I look at you my Friend and I see a child at play
frolicking in muddy streams, splashing rivers into
oceans and carrying each molecule gently
to the sky for another round like a child handing water to his Father
for the first time.

You are neither boastful nor meek.
You are not shy nor are you seeking attention
There is simply abundance and grace with you my Friend
and you ask nothing of me...save I am my self...fully...always... and
you ask without asking...lead without
leading...cause...effortlessly.

My Friend, it is simple with You.
