About me:

Please vote for Animal Place as your favorite sanctuary in VegNews' VeggieAwards! We're moving! That's right, Animal Place is moving from our 60-acre sanctuary to a gorgeous, 600-acre sanctuary! We're very excited about this move. Want to help? Visit our website.

Animal Place is a 60-acre sanctuary for farmed animals located in northern California. There are over 300 animals at the shelter, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys and rabbits. We also serve as a temporary "foster" home for dogs from Mexico and local Californian shelters.

We promote veganism and vegetarianism and offer sanctuary tours, cooking classes and workshops throughout the year.

Farmed animals are the most exploited and least protected group of animals in the world. 27 million are killed in the United States alone each day, nearly 19,000 per minute – equating to a tragic total of 10 billion animals per year.

Over the past 50 years, animal agriculture has evolved from small, family farms to large corporate factory farming systems. Modern agribusiness corporations are built upon the cutthroat attitude of increasing profit margins at all costs – which has had devastating consequences for the animals in their care.

Farmed animals lead a life of misery from the moment they are born to when they are slaughtered. Every day, everywhere across the globe, millions of these animals are kept in confinement, mutilated as part of routine husbandry practices, mishandled, and deprived of basic necessities.

Isn't it time we evolve as a society and refuse to condone such needless suffering?

While thousands of animal shelters in the United States are designed for cats and dogs, only a small handful of such facilities is in place for farmed animals.

Animal Place provides this much needed shelter and sanctuary for over 300 chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys, rabbits, and cattle. We allow them to live their lives out in peace and to serve as ambassadors for their species. When visitors meet Howie the steer or Patti the pig firsthand they discover the vitality, depth, and individuality of these animals that are typically only seen as food.

Three Animal Protection Bills Face Next Hurdle

The California State Assembly has passed three animal protection bills (A.B. 241/A.B. 242/A.B. 243) and now we need to push them through the Senate. Your state senator, Mark Leno, sits on the committee that will consider the bills this Tuesday.

A.B. 241 would crack down on cruel puppy mills by limiting the number of unsterilized dogs and cats a person can maintain. Puppy mills are large-scale commercial facilities that treat dogs like cash crops.
A.B. 242 upgrades the penalties for being a spectator at a dogfight. The current dogfighting law in California is weak compared to other states and is ranked 43rd in the country.
A.B. 243 strengthens the animal cruelty law in California by prohibiting convicted animal abusers from owning other animals in the future.
Please urge Sen. Leno to vote 'YES' on these bills to improve animal protection laws in California. It is very important that your senator hear from constituents who care about humane treatment of animals.

    TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to Sen. Leno at (916) 651-4003 before Tuesday to urge support for these bills. Remember to leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town]. Humane treatment of animals is a very important issue to me. I hope [senator's name] will support three bills to strengthen animal protection laws in California: A.B. 241, A.B. 242, and A.B. 243. Thank you."

Thank you for all you do for animals.

    IMPORTANT!! TELL EVERYONE!!!
sign petition- NO to Mike Vick as PETA spokesperson
    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/sign-petition-no-tomike-vick-as-peta-spokesperson
    Target:PETA & Commissioner, NFL, Roger S. Goodell
Sponsored by: Advocate for Saving Dogs
PETA helping Vick get back into the game by making him an animal-rights spokesperson!
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Michael Vick is in talks to become the new
    spokesman for PETA.
    The disgraced one-time NFL superstar
serving prison time for funding an illegal dog-fighting ring is primed to do
public-service ads for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upon his
release later this month. According to three people with knowledge of the
matter, the proposed endorsement is part of a comprehensive PR scheme aimed at rehabilitating the quarterback.
    Other image-changing moves
That's not all Mr. Vick will do to try to rehabilitate his image. People
with knowledge of his comeback plan said it will also include mea culpa
TV interviews, PSAs and charitable donations to other animal-rights
organizations (or perhaps the formation of his own foundation), along
with the possibility of working with PETA. But this might be the mother of all PR jobs. Mr. Vick's obstacles are many: a hard-line NFL commissioner who wants to see "genuine remorse" before reinstating Mr. Vick to the league; individual franchises that might be wary of the backlash and potential damage to their brands from signing Mr. Vick; and an incredulous public that remains shocked by the story.
