Animal Rights Coalition's Blurbs |
About me:
Mission Statement:
The Animal Rights Coalition, Inc. (ARC) is dedicated to ending the suffering, abuse, and exploitation of non-human animals through information, education, and advocacy.
The Past ... And The Future :
The Animal Rights Coalition was founded in 1980 and formally incorporated in 1981. ARC's membership has grown over the years and it continues to be a locally and nationally recognized voice for animal rights in Minnesota.
During ARC's first decade, the organization focused on national efforts including national conferences held in Minnesota with internationally known speakers and participants.
ARC's second decade saw many successful campaigns such as stopping the University of Minnesota Medical School from using live dogs in cardiology laboratory exercises and persuading the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley to discontinue using its gas chamber for euthanasia. ARC successfully sued the University of Minnesota for access to records concerning the use of animals in research. Support by ARC members led at least one local school district to recognize students' rights to non-animal alternatives to dissection. The national controversy over the Make-A-Wish Foundation granting a bear-hunting trip began when ARC formally voiced opposition and led to a ban on such trips.
In its third decade ARC is focusing on spreading the word about compassionate living. Community outreach activities vary from booths at large community events such as the Twin Cities Pet Expo, Children's Expo, Living Green Expo, Juneteenth, GLBT Pride Festival, Women's Expo, and Education Minnesota Professional Conference, to leafletting at events such as the American Veterinary Medical Association national conference, to assisting the hundreds of individuals who call or email looking for help with individual animal issues.
In addition to our solo efforts, ARC works with numerous other local groups to help them with their needs, including Animal Ark No-Kill Shelter, Compassionate Action for Animals, Hamline Animal Rights Coalition, HOWL! (Help Our Wolves Live!), Wildcat Sanctuary, Chicken Run Rescue, Coalition to Save Our Deer, Carlton County Humane Society, Chippewa County Humane Association, Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation, and Minnesota Spay/Neuter Project.
ARC is committed to helping to solve the companion animal overpopulation problem at the source. ARC donated the funds to help Animal Ark, the area's largest no-kill shelter, purchase a mobile surgical van dubbed the "Neuter Commuter." To date, the Neuter Commuter has spayed and neutered over 700 feral cats. ARC also raised funds and provided supplies for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, a newly formed rescue group on the Red Lake Reservation and participated in the Humane Society of the United State's Rural Area Veterinary Services program at the Red Lake Reservation, which spayed, neutered, and gave medical treatment to hundreds animals.
Looking toward the future, we believe we can continue to achieve our goals through practicing non-violence and compassion for all (including the human animal). We believe that positive change comes about from connection, communication, and education, not from demonizing those on the other side of the philosophical fence. Instead of continually (and loudly) proclaiming what we are against, we believe it is far more effective to let people know what we are for. We are not here to win some imaginary battle to prove that "we are good and they are bad," but to peacefully organize and form alliances to create positive change.

"Hello. My name is Colleen and I'm an ARC member and the author of this blog. I am so excited about the opportunity to share my thoughts with you and promote the mission and message of the ARC. I am hope, hope, hoping that you will share your thoughts with us as well. In case you didn't see it on our website, ARC's mission is to end the suffering, abuse, and exploitation of non-human animals through information, education, and advocacy. I hope this blog can be a place to exchange ideas and information in the fight to end animal suffering. The more we can share our thoughts and band together, the stronger our voice will become and the closer we come to putting a stop to the cruel and inhumane ways animals are treated.
I became interested in animal rights about three years ago, when several of my friends and loved ones informed me about the horrors of factory farming. After watching the video "Meet your meat," and doing some of my own research about factory farming, I quickly gave up eating meat. The more I learned about our industrialized food industry and the way animals are treated as machines - with no regard to their suffering or welfare - I gave up eating, wearing, and using any animal products at all. To be quite honest, it was really quite easy!! I also became involved in ARC and other advocacy projects.
ARC is just one of many animal welfare organizations you can get involved in. But, do you know what the best part about helping animals is? You don't always have to look to a group to get involved. There are plenty of things that anyone can do, right in his/her own backyard. Like this little story, that proves even the smallest gestures of compassion can make a difference in the lives of animals. It sure made a difference to this little duck!
What are some ways that you have helped animals? I'd love to hear your stories."
Who We Are :
The Animal Rights Coalition, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt, all-volunteer organization. The organization and all of its programs are carried out by our members. Donations to ARC are tax deductible. Anyone interested in joining ARC is welcome.
