The Animal Welfare Society, located in West Kennebunk, Maine, is a private, on-profit humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. The founders included the late Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall and the late Mr. Donald Shephard who served as the Society's first President of the Board of Directors. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 18 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 persons.
As our mission statement reads: "The Animal Welfare Society exists to provide humane shelter and care to animals temporarily in need of housing, and to further the cause of responsible animal adoption and ownership through education and public awareness. The society actively promotes kindness, the elimination of cruelty and neglect to all animals, and the lifelong commitment of people to their pets."

The Animal Welfare Society believes that dogs and people can both benefit from learning and growing together in obedience classes. The skills learned can help form the human/animal bond and will last throughout the life-long relationship. In light of this belief, we offer a number of exciting obedience classes by Nationally Certified Dog Trainers that will suit the needs of you and your dog.
The shelter provides a discounted five or six week obedience training course to all dogs adopted through the Animal Welfare Society. The courses are open to other dogs for a nominal fee. Our goal is to do everything we can to make our adoptions permanent. We understand that many dogs may have come to the shelter with a behavioral problem, and our classes help solve these problems. We have seen a decrease in the number of dogs returned since the implementation of these classes. Classes are offered on a continuous basis and are available at different times and days.
Animal Welfare Society is proud to be involved in the Adopt License Plate Initiative. In order to go before the Maine Legislature with the proposed plate we are required to pre-sell 2,000 plates. Stop by AWS on Holland Road 11 - 4:30 any day but Wednesday to purchase your "Adopt" Plate. FMI or to purchase online, go to;

Hi there. Last Thurday, I adopted Halo! Soemone was right on when they gave him this name. he is an angel sent straight from heaven! We have had so much fun over the past few days getting to know each other. He is truely a wonderful soul and I am so blessed to have found him. He has met a variety of dogs, cats, and people over the weekend and they all seem to have been won over by this little heart. Today it is off to the vet for a health exam and then straight to the BEACH! Time for playing and running and more bonding. Thank you for all that you do at AWS! You made this relationship possible. Woof! :)
I got "palmer" now known as Dakota from you in 2006 and I thought it was about time to lets everyone know how hes doing. He was a stray with almost no fur or personality and he is the COMPLETE opposite now. I love him to peices!
I adopted Buzzy from your shelter 5 years ago. He is such a loving, patient cat. It hurts me to think how someone could have given this cat up, but then thankful he is mine!! Buzzy always keeps me company when I work from home, and sits on my work laptop once a day to get my attention. Thank you so much for bringing Buzzy in to our lives!!
Hello AWS! We love our new kitty Anela! She was a little shy at first but she warmed up quickly and she seems to love her new home. She is such a sweet kitty - she follows us everywhere and 'talks' to us constantly. We love having her around! Thanks for taking such good care of her at the shelter. Keep up the good work! Thank you again!! :)
We love our little kitten SOOO much! She is a perfect fit for our family! Our two boys picked out the name "Molly Bee Fiffy" (formerly Nim). She went to the vet and has a clean bill of health and the rest of her shots. Thank You, she is the sweetest!
