The Anime Real World Presents
A Danny T. Chat
For his first chat Danny T. set down with one the shows stars James Roberts to not only discuss his feelings and thoughts on Anime Real World:Dallas, but also to know more about the man, the myth, and the inner Waldo.
Danny T.: Tell us about your first cosplay experience: who, what, where, when, and how did it go?
James R.: I believe it was A-Kon 14 the last A-Kon at the hotel in the airport. I cosplayed Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun because my friends told me I had to be him and had to go to a convention with them. It went pretty well, a lot of people seemed to like it.
Danny T.: What made you decide to play your character? Was there a certain aspect to Waldo that made you decide that this was the character that you were going to portray?
James R.: Well actually Chris and I were discussing the new Anime Real World season and he was the one who suggested Waldo. When he told me I was immediately up for it, I mean come on... It's Waldo, there's potential there if used properly. Waldo just rules, I mean no one ever sees the guy and he's dressed like a walking candy cane. It's great! I'm looking forward to the project and hope that there's a lot of good times involved.
Danny T.: Now, in The Anime Real World: Dallas we have added a little back story to Waldo's character, and also have given him a unique personality, was that your idea? Also, what do you like best about getting to play this version of Waldo?
James R.: Again it was Chris who gave me his ideas for what he'd like to do with Waldo and the potential in each one. He asked for my opinion and we worker and re-worked the idea and ended up with what we have now. I think that playing a paranoid crazy man who just happens to be Waldo will be fun. I've always loved acting and it's a learning and growing opportunity as well as have fun.....Really I just like the candy cane sweater *shifty eyes*
Danny T.: What got you interested in acting? Are you one of those people who has always been an actor or did you catch the acting bug later on in life?
James R.: I caught it my freshman year in high school when I had to take theater class..... I guess I've always liked acting before then, but more just to goof off and get laughs. But working on scenes and monologues in class really showed me how much I loved performing. I really like how people become these different characters and can evocate certain emotions from an audience
Danny T.: Do you do anything else beyond acting?
James R.: A. Well I haven't gotten to do any acting in a long time. I've spent...probably 2 years working my butt off saving up money and going to school to become a massage therapist. I used to live in Tulsa, OK and up there I worked for 7-Up back in 2004 as a merchandiser and didn't really have time for theater or any kind of acting. I was working so much to get down here and go to school. I moved to Dallas a year later in the summer of 2005 the Thursday before A-Kon that year. Started up school that July and here I am, 2 years later a licensed Massage Therapist. Been doing it for little over a year now. I love my job, but I don't have much time for anything else. Though I may be getting Saturdays off soon, so here's hoping!! *thumbs up*
Danny T.: What do you look forward to most in this season of The Anime Real World?
James R.: Fun! Seriously, I really need some more excitement in my life. Like I already said, all I mostly do is work and more work. So I'm really looking forward to getting together with the rest of the cast, like you & Chris and really just having fun filming this. I know that it will be work, but it will be enjoyable, at least that's what I'm hoping for.
Danny T.: What do you think of the other cast members, and the production staff at Saturday Matinee Films?
James R.: Well I only really know Chris McCormick, Anne, & Lauren. I don't know Jeremy, the other Chris, Meagan, or you all that well. But the time I've spent with everyone, you all seem to be awesome people. I get good vibes from each of you. Then again, I always get along with everyone. It's going to be great, everyone seems to understand everyone else's humor so it's a good mesh of people.
Danny T.: Besides your own character, what character are you most excited about seeing in the show?
James R.: Man... seriously, Carl! Carl, Carl, Carl! No disrespect to my other cast mates, everyone's character is great. But damn, Chris' Carl is perfect and I can't get over how well he does the voice. Out of all the characters that I look forward to watching while on set is Carl just lounging around scratching himself. Hahaha
Danny T.: Now, not too pull focus from you, but I have been told that I too should become a certified massuse, and my fingers have been given the nick name “Magic Fingers”. So that brings me to my next question. Hhow about a massage off?
James R.: I'll massage the pants right off you and everyone else, if you know what I mean *wink wink* Hahaha
Danny T.: Who are your favorite actors and actresses?
James R.: Tom Hanks and Robin Williams right off the top of my head. I like how they can be involved in all types of genres. Edward Norton, Christian Bale as well. Christian Bale is dedicated, The Machinist and Batman Begins are proof of that. Losing all that weight then gaining all that muscle. As far as actresses go.... I'd say Mandy Moore, Amanda Bynes. Scarlett Johansson because they are sexy and around my age. Sandra Bullock & Julia Roberts have always been good actresses in my mind.
Danny T.: Are there any animes or mangas that you are into at the moment?
James R.: The obvious ones are Bleach and Naruto. I really like Trinity Blood and Gankutsuou is amazing. I'm looking for more animes to get into right now actually. As far as mangas go I like Bleach and Naruto again.... and Blade of the Immortal. Anyone reading this, I suggest you all go check out Blade of the Immortal. The art is beautiful and the story is pretty awesome. But that's just me. Oh! Berserk manga too is pretty badass.
Danny T.: If you could be any anime character (okay...any animated character), which one would you be and why?
James R.: Dona-freaking-Tello from"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Donatello rules! He's a turtle, he's a ninja, and he's a genius. That's a powerful Trifecta!
Danny T.: Do you have any hobbies beyond acting?
James R.: Well, I play the Yu-Gi-Oh card game competitively and I play video games. Watching anime obviously. I enjoy basketball as well.
Danny T.: What are some of your favorite video games?
James R.: Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors are two of my favorites. Star Wars: KOTOR games too, I really want them to make another. Final Fantasy Tactics has always been an all time favorite, can't wait to play the PSP remake. The Zelda series and most shooting games.
Danny T.: If you could pick two of this season's characters to take each other on in a kiddie-pool-filled-with-pudding fight, who would you choose? And who would win and why?
James R.: Carl & Mr. Satan, because both men would be up for anything. I think they'd fight to a stand still just because no matter what one does, the other will try to match it.
Danny T.: Now you have had a chance to read two of the finished scripts. Are there any scenes in particular you are excited to shoot?
James R.: A. Either the meeting of the cast in episode 1 or the guys hanging out in episode.
Danny T.: Why those two?
James R.: A. well because the cast will all be in the same scene and I think scenes with everyone at once will be the most hilarious. The scene of the guys will be good too, just because all of the characters are so varied in personality.
Danny T.: Now some of the fans might be interested to know that some things in the show are improved. Are you nervous about doing improv?
James R.: A. who can be nervous about improv, improv is on the fly and unexpected things are always done and said. Can't really be nervous because you just say what you say. Now if it was live, I'd probably be a bit nervous. Filming and incidentally improving that goes with it isn't that much of a problem.
Danny T.: Before we say good-bye anything you’d like to say to the Anime Real World Fans?
James R.: Thanks for all those who are waiting patiently for us to get the show started up. I am not a crook, also..... Waldo is single, ladies WOOOO!!!!
Danny T.: Well that begs one more question. What kind of girl are you looking for?
James R.: Someone to get lost in the crowd with. lol.
I'd like to thank James for taking time from his busy schedual to sit down and chat with me, Until next time this is Danny T. saying look out for the unexpexted on "The Anime Real World: Dallas" Coming this Fall!!!
