Anime Toonz series:
Anime (Japanese animation) has been growing in popularity in the United States over the past decade or so. Over these years, the anime phenomenon has blossomed from a mostly underground/cult hobby enjoyed by hardcore fans to a multi-billion dollar licensing, broadcasting, home video and merchandising industry. The influence of anime on today's popular culture can be seen in many aspects of everyday life, from video games and toys to fashion, marketing campaigns and Western cartoons and live action movies.
One of the elements that anime fans hold dear to their hearts is the music used in the shows - mostly original soundtracks but also J-pop (Japanese pop) songs licensed from popular Japanese artists. The quality and scope of anime music is decades ahead of anything produced for Western cartoons, for which the theme songs are more often than not simply a minor consideration. The significance, time, and resources assigned to the music in Japanese animation is evidenced by the volume of sales of anime singles and soundtrack albums, the presence of internet forums dedicated to anime music, and the emergence of home-made remixes of anime theme songs online.
Since 2001, Fuego Media has been releasing Anime Toonz - a series of compilations comprising remixes of theme songs from popular (new and old) anime series. These songs are given new life via house, techno, trance, breakbeat, drum & bass and hardcore reworkings by up-and-coming and veteran DJs/producers from around the world. Anime Toonz is created with both anime and electronic music lovers in mind. Vocals are performed in the original language – usually by popular Japanese seiyuus (voice actresses) - and remixed into contemporary dance, club, or party music format.
