Unlike most songwriter's, I didn't grow up with a lot of music playing in my home. My first cassette tape was MADONNA - "Like a Virgin". I learned three chords and wrote my first song when I was seventeen. Edie Brickell was what I was listening to then (I was loving Nirvana too). When I was eighteen my friend Marc Majors made me a cassette tape of Joni Mitchell's "Miles of Aisles" - my favorite song is Peoples Party. When I was nineteen, I worked at this little record store and my friend Bill introduced me to Ani Difranco - the album was "Not a Pretty Girl".
