~WELCOME TO ANITA'S PAGE~
Anita Page, was born Anita Pomares on 4th August 1910 in New York. The beautiful blonde spent her childhood in Queens and lived with her mother, father and younger brother.
Anita's friend Betty Bronson was starring in films on the East Coast in 1925 and asked Anita if she would like some extra work. Anita said yes and began work as an extra in films such as 'A kiss for Cinderella' and 'Love 'em and Leave 'em'. In 1926 Anita was cast as the lead female in a film called 'Beach Nuts' which was never released, the film company closed down and moved west. The company took Anita and the other female lead and moved out to Hollywood.
Once Anita was in Hollywood, she was approached by Betty Bronson's agent and managed to get her a screen test at MGM. The screen test was a success despite Anita having a cold and signed up with MGM in 1927 becoming an over night star and leading lady in her first picture 'Telling the World' co-starring William Haines, a hugely successful and popular leading man of the silent screen.
Anita made a string of successful 'A' quality films for MGM in the late 1920's,the last days of the silents.Films made at this time include 'Our Dancing Daughters' with Joan Crawford and 'While the City Sleeps' with Lon Chaney, 'Speedway' and 'Navy Blues' with William Haines, and 'The Flying Fleet' with Ramon Novarro.
In 1929,MGM made there first talking picture, 'The Broadway Melody' which starred Anita, Bessie Love and Charles King. 'The Broadway Melody' won best picture at the Academy Awards that year and was the highest grossing picture of 1929.
In the same year, Anita's agent pushed her to ask for more money at MGM, which she got and the quality roles stopped coming. MGM lost interest in her from 1930 onwards and starred her in films playing the second female leads. Some very good films were still made around this period such as 'War Nurse' and 'Night Court'.
In 1933 Anita was nearing the end of her six year contract with MGM and they loaned her out to 'Poverty Row' studios to star in films such as 'Jungle Bride' and 'I have Lived'. Once Anita's contract expired, she walked out and never looked back.
Anita made a film in 1936 and then retired from the screen.
In 1937, Anita married Herschel House. They had two daughters,Linda and Sandra and the family moved around the USA while House was in the navy. They also lived in the Phillipines and Hawaii.Once back in Hollywood, Anita settled again in the Colorado area.
Anita made a comeback to the screen in 1996, starring in various films and now resides in Van Nuys,California with her best friend film star Randal Malone.
