Born and raised in the military suburb of Newport News, Virginia, Anna Charlock wrote her first song at 12 years old. It was a poppy number called "Never Stop"; dedicated to her unrequited seventh-grade love. Her mother gifted her with an electric guitar for her 14th birthday. She named it "Fox", after her favorite character on the TV show The X-Files. Anna spent her adolescence shut in her bedroom writing songs and poems about how much life sucks. Her school friends were into Japanese anime, but Anna preferred listening to punk rock on the radio and watching the Vh1 show Pop-Up Video.
In 2003, at 18, she flew across the country to attend college at the state university in Boulder, Colorado. With her, she brought her steel-string acoustic guitar, Bella, as well as trusty Fox. She kept her dormitory roommate awake at night playing songs by Ani Difranco and the Shins. Within a few years, having established an original repertoire, she was regularly charming local open-mic-night guests and passerby on the Pearl Street Mall. For her college graduation in 2007, Anna's uncle gave her a brilliant new Epiphone electric guitar. It is named Carrie, after the lead singer of her favorite band Sleater-Kinney. Now with a foothold in area musician circles, Anna has been experimenting with new sounds and musical styles.
