Bio
hey friends! I'm rarely checking myspace, these days. if you want to get in touch, email! arobertsgevalt at gmail dot com ! my current music project with elizabeth laprelle is here: www.facebook.com/annaandelizabeth and my writing project, about six women fiddlers and banjo players from Kentucky is online at www.annarobertsgevalt.com/in_her_first_heaven . .. I took a plunge into this music about five years ago. Not planning to resurface any time. I've left the hills of Vermont for the hills of Virginia, where I live in a little village on the New River & teach music. I've worked with some great stringbands in the last couple of years-- the Blind Tiger String Band with Brett Ratliff and John Haywood, and Old Sledge, with Sabra Guzman and Chance McCoy. Great musicians-- check out their pages below! I composed music for a Brecht production at Virginia Tech this fall, and am currently beginning work on another project for the spring, and composing for a play by playwright Eric Ehn. I'm thrilled to be collaborating with Elizabeth LaPrelle on a multimedia storytelling & music piece: shadow puppetry, papier mache puppets, sewn scrolls called crankies, stories and balllads, all woven together, in a winter-themed piece entitled Snow is on the Ground. More information at www.facebook.com/annandelizabeth .... This is a profoundly humbling music, and I feel so honored to be able to be part of this community, and tradition. I am grateful those who've taught me so much, particularly Paul David Smith, and John Harrod. These fiddle tunes, turns out, are the kind of thing you spend your whole life working at, trying to get to the bottom of them. .... I am available to teach music, give workshops on my research, teach flatfoot dancing, and play gigs as a guitarist, banjo player or fiddler. I have performed and given workshops along the East Coast, and in France; I have taught at The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes (Washington), the Augusta Heritage Center (West Virginia), Cowan Creek Mountain Music School (Kentucky), Pinewoods Dance Camp (Massachussetts), L'Ecole De Musique Tradicionelle (Limoges, France), and the Champlain Valley Folk Festival (Vermont) <br/> A few videos, from Augusta Old Time Week, last year: .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Paul David Smith, my favorite Kentucky fiddler, and Dave Bing on fiddle, me on banjo, Don Pedi on dulcimer, playing Martha Campbell. These guys are, quite simply, incredible. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. me, with Rory Mullenex on the guitar, and the killer duo of Rebekah Weiler and Hillarie Burhans on banjos. .. .. ____________________________________________________________________ .. .. .. .. ......
