Dear Friends,
My background in opera can be read at my website www.annatonna.com.
Being an American singer born of immigrant parents, I have been influenced greatly by the culture of Spain and Latin American and have a huge interest in
Spanish Art Song
Latin American Art Song
As singer living in NYC and having many composer friends, I also dedicate time to American composers in song and vocal chamber ensemble. I am a founder of a group that is dedicated to American composers and any music that would be "new" to our audiences:
www.newmusicnewyork.com
Founded by singers, we champion both art song and vocal chamber ensemble written by American composers, especially contemporary ones! Our concerts are very theme specific, check out the website for details.
My upcoming projects include:
Folclore y Arte: songs by composers of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico
Songs of Julio Gomez (1886-1973) I spent a year in Spain 2007-2008 researching the songs by this wonderful composer, who's style is akin to late romantic European composers (Strauss and Berlioz)
Isaac Albeniz: The Ultimate Romantic (this concert explores his works for piano, piano transriptions and songs)
Conjunto Landestoy: This concert celebrates the work of the Dominican composer Rafael "Bullumba" Landestoy, presenting his works for piano, guitar and popular songs. Landestoy's music has been performed by the luminaries of the heyday of latinamerican popular music in the 40's and 50's such as Tona la Negra, Celia Cruz and Fernando Fernandez.
Spain in the Bronx: this concert for guitar, singer and dancer explores the influence of Spain in the Latin Amerian diaspora of NYC and the Bronx.
Marhaba is an Arabic word used in the Middle East as a greeting (in English Hello).
The origin of the word comes from Aramaic, the old Syrian language of Jesus Christ.
It is a combination of two words: MAR + HABA
MAR, meaning God, Lord or Master.
HABA, meaning Love.
So, Marhaba means "God is Love".
The following is the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, recited by Majida El-Roumi:
Marhaba Anna
May you celebrate the love of God deep within your heart as Jesus brings new meaning to life... Joy, Hope, Peace... because His love is eternal.
May His eternal love shine upon you always!
Nabeel
In this old world that we live in
There is one great joy that everyone can share,
The joy of giving to the
People for whom we care;
If you show love in small ways
It is always there.
To be giving and forgiving
Is to know the reason why we're living.
What's so hard about giving?
It's a perfectly simple art
The trick is to live with love from the start
And to give with an open heart.
Dear Anna
May your Christmas be as special and unique as you are!
Nabeel
