Recent news ... My newest release "Points of View" on Appleseed Recordings (Fall 2009) features original songs with a few co-writes with some of my favorite artists; Peter Erskine (Romeo and Juliet), Cindy Mangsen (Gardens), Michael Smith I Am You), and Allen Power(My Daughter and Vincent van Gogh). I've loaded several cuts above for your listening pleasure!Come to the website to order the CD ...
I also just got news that I have received the 2009/10 Pennsylvania Partner's in the Arts Project Stream Award. This year we'll be using the funding to premiere an evening of songs featuring Jay Ansill's settings and arrangements of Robert Graves poems for small string ensemble. Although I have already recorded 6 Graves' songs on Jay's CD "A Lost World" these pieces are being composed specifically for this project.
This month I received an honor from the Friends of Bound for Glory Radio Show hosted by Phil Shapiro, who called to let me know I was this year's favorite performer.
Earlier this year I finished a theme song for "Talk.in" a new Feminist radio show, produced and sang on "Local Wonders" a musical based on Ted Kooser's poetry (written by Chicago actor/director Paul Amandes), and was a featured soloist with The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra (Jay Ansill did the orchestrations for that evening).
The last CD I released was a CD called Ef You Don't Watch Out! which features 10 poems by James Whitcomb Riley (the Victorian Hoosier poet) set to song. There's a lot of frailing banjo, guitar, and piano - simple parlor style appropriate to the era in which Riley wrote. Some beautiful fiddle work by Sara Milanovich, back-up vocals by Cindy Mangsen and Priscilla Herdman, as well as, bass, mandolin, lead guitar by co-producer Scott Petito.
My 2006 released CD, Beauty Attends:The Heartsongs of Opal Whiteley, was a dream come true for me. I have been in love with Opal's writing since I first read Benjamin Hoff's The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow and I hope these songs will introduce more people to Opal's worldview and Hoff's biography (which includes the diary). Michael Smith's melodies are challenging, distinct , and with Scott Petito's arrangements lead the heart toward the lyric, and so, back to 6-year-old Opal's wisdom. That is my hope, of course.
Slow going to the bone Into the lesser unknown I might be all alone But slow going is home It’s slow going where I roam Outside but in the zone I might be on my own But slow going slow going is home

It is a great day to be alive! What Question can I ask to empower myself and others? How can I improve the experience of those I encounter today? What can I do to facilitate your Gift?
