Anne Rhodes combines coloratura agility and bel canto lyricism with extended vocal techniques and warm chest tones to sing a broad range of experimental, classical, and improvised music. Drawing heavily on her extensive classical training, Rhodes also incorporates her knowledge of jazz, South Indian voice, overtone singing, and shape-note singing into creative improvisation, ensemble work, and collaboration with composers. Based in New Haven, she performs regularly in Connecticut, Boston, and New York City.
Rhodes grew up in Portland, Maine, where she began studying voice at the age of 16. She earned a B.M. in Voice Performance at the Boston University School for the Arts in 1999. In 2006, she received an M.A. in Music Performance from Wesleyan University, where she focused on experimental music, improvisation and collaborating with composers, and studied with Anthony Braxton, Neely Bruce, Alvin Lucier, Ron Kuivila, B. Balasubrahmaniyan, and Jay Hoggard. She has performed with Portland Opera Repertory Theatre, the Crane School of Music Opera Ensemble, the Boston University Chamber Choir, the New England Conservatory Continuing Education Opera Studio, MIT Gilbert and Sullivan Players, the Anthony Braxton Large Ensemble, the FLUX Quartet, Mirror Boiyz, Connecticut Opera, and Yale Opera, and has premiered works by composers including Anthony Braxton, Neil Leonard, Taylor Ho Bynum, and Alvin Lucier. Anne currently studies voice with Elizabeth Sunders and is a member of the New Haven Improvisors Collective.
