Annesley Catherine Black - Biography Annesley Black was born Sept. 8 1979 in Ottawa Ontario, Canada. She began her studies at Concordia University in Montreal and recieved her Bachelor's Degree in Music (Composition) in 2004 from Mcgill University under Prof. Brian Cherney. She studied composition from 2004-2006 with Prof. York Höller and Hans-Ulrich Humpert at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. She completed her studies in composition with Mathias Spahlinger and electronic music with Orm Finnendahl at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg (Diplom Dec.2008). Her pieces have been performed in Germany and in Canada by various ensembles including Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), ensemble ascolta (Stuttgart), Ensemble Mosaik (Berlin), Ensemble Surplus (Freiburg), Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (Montréal), Quintett Boréale and Ensemble Synapse (Montréal) in such festivals as Ultraschall Festival (Berlin, 2008), Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (2006, 2008) Klang werkstatt- Berlin (2008), ZKM, Piano+ (Karlsruhe, 2008). Since 2008 Annesley Black has performed as a Sound Engineer Assistant for the SWR Experimental Studio for recordings and concerts. Annesley has also had a history of interdisciplinary collaborations. She has performed and toured as an actress (Criminals Collective Company, Counternotes Theatre Group, 1998), and as a guitarist and singer/ songwriter in numerous rock and popular bands including The New International Standards and Special Interest Group (record release: The Bright Occasion, 2003). She has appeared as a percussionist/ speaker in the dada-ist performance-art trio/ cult phenomenon Hyperprism (Montréal, Québec). She has also composed music for dance (Collapsable Uprisings, 2003 choreograper: Katie Ward), and theatre (The fantastic tale of a man who travelled a forgotten world, 2001 dir: Anita Rochon). Selected prizes, awards: 2003 Composer-in-Residence for the Mcgill Contemporary Music Ensemble (Mcgill University, Montreal) dir: Denys Bouliane 2006 „Stipendium Prize Winner" in the 43rd International Summer Courses for New Music, Darmstadt 2006 Selected to participate in the Eighth Young Artists Forum Competition (Ensemble Modern/ Gesellschaft fuer Neue Musik) 2007,2008 Scholarship from the Mozart-Stiftung, Frankfurt for Composition 2008 Busoni Förderpreis, Akademie der Künste, Berlin 2009 Stipend for the Young Academy, Akademie der Künste, Berlin 2009 Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart -
