Anne Sudworth's Interests
|
| General | Art in all of its many manifestations, painting, drawing, creating things in general.
"The Goblin Tree"
109cm x 53cm (43” x 21”)
Pastel on Ingres Board
Ancient sites, megaliths, burial chambers, medieval buildings and ruins, especially abbeys and castles. I've painted a number of them and hope to do more.
I love history and anything to do with archaeology.
The British landscape never ceases to amaze me, particularly that of the English Lake District.
All trees -.very ancient trees are so special.
Moonlight and starlight.

Going to Goth clubs and festivals - our favourite is the Whitby Goth Weekend. Watching bands, dancing and partying in general. I always design and make my own clothes, it's just another form of creating.

I love all animals, especially horses. I've ridden since I was five and my own horse has featured in several of my paintings - a truly handsome but spoilt 16.2hh chestnut thoroughbred. My cat has also appeared in my work. I'm involved with quite a few animal charities, check out the Animals Page on my web site for useful addresses.
"Ethidwyre"
69cm x 54cm (27”x 21”)

Classical English literature - Shakespeare, especially Richard III and Hamlet. I love Byron, Wordsworth and Coleridge, Sir Walter Scott, William Cowper, William Blake, Thomas Hardy - and I collect old books, particularly 19th Century poetry books. I've always had an interest in British mythology and folklore, the Mabinogion is fascinating, as is The White Goddess by Robert Graves.
And chocolate,I'm always interested in that.

I spy with my little eye, is that someone bringing my chocolate supply?

| | Music |
I like lots of different kinds of music, mostly Goth and Industrial and I listen to quite a lot of classical music.
It would take too long to list all the bands I like but they include Ataraxia, Fields of the Nephilim, Rosetta Stone, Play Dead, Cubanate, Suspiria, Alien Sex Fiend, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, James Ray, Dead Can Dance, Type O Negative, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxie and The Banshees, X-mal Deutschland, Front line Assembly, All About Eve, The Mission, Marilyn Manson, Portishead, Led Zeppelin, Front 242, Covenant, Rammstein, Jethro Tull, Southern Death Cult, Children on Stun, The Damned, Zakk Wylde, Pink Floyd, Fad Gadget, Praga Khan, Bauhaus, Killing Miranda, VNV Nation, New Model Army, The Cure, Virgin Prunes, PIL, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Sound Garden, Ultraviolence, Iggy Pop, Metallica, The Cramps, Die Krupps, David Bowie, Banco de Gaia, Pantera, The Marionettes, The Prodigy.
My favourite classical composer is Ralph Vaughn Williams - Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending and I love Allegri's Miserere and Mundy's Vox Patris caelestis, Elgar, Walton, Holst, Mozart, Haydn, Bach, Purcell, Handel, almost all Plain Chant, lots of opera, again the list could go on.

"Night"

Anne Sudworth is internationally known for her magical trees and haunting moonlit landscapes. She has been drawing and painting since early childhood and started her career as a professional artist in 1993 when she presented her first exhibition "Visions and Views". Many more exhibitions have followed including the highly successful "Dreams and Whispers" show and "The Dark Side". She has since exhibited widely, most recently in London and her work can be found in many collections around the world, including Britain, Germany, Australia, America, Japan and New Zealand.
Her dark, moody pastel paintings are deeply involved with nature and its more mystical aspects. She says "Much of my work contains overtones of magic and ancient beliefs. I like to explore the idea that the earth has a darker, lesser known side, perhaps one of which our ancestors were more aware. This is probably most evident in my Earth Light Trees."

She is perhaps best known for her "Earth Light Trees", an ongoing series of paintings which represents a central theme in her work. These pictures all show imaginary scenes in which trees, forests and woodlands glow with their own "earth light" and life force, symbolising the power and energy which the earth holds. Moonlight is also a dominant feature, with the moon in various phases providing an important part of the symbolism which runs throughout her paintings. Over recent years the demand for her work has grown and her original paintings and limited edition prints are now sold internationally, both through galleries and private commissions.
The first book on her work called "Enchanted World - the art of Anne Sudworth" is available as hard back and paper back. There is also a limited edition deluxe cloth bound version which comes boxed and includes four prints.
The new book on Anne's work called "Gothic Fantasies" features over eighty of her paintings and is available as hardback and special collectors edition. This comes in black mock suede in a presentation box.

Part of a feature on Anne by John Grant, taken from Artists and Illustrators Magazine.-
"Using research that shows how the human brain processes visual information, scientists have recently been able to prove that artists do indeed see the world differently. But of course the sum of what an artists 'sees' - which we call artistic vision - extends well beyond purely optical function. The work of a gifted artist offers windows onto a profound, insightful reality. True artistry is, arguably, that initial act of seeing; the technical rendition, while of course extremely important, is secondary.
The work of artist, Anne Sudworth, proves a point. A brilliant technician - her evocative, often broody pastel works are superbly rendered and display an almost uncanny mastery of light in all its many manifestations - it is the vision inspiring her work that sets it apart.
Her pictures have a powerful affect: they pulse with meaning, with the sense that there are many more levels of reality than the superficial one we normally accept as being all there is. One could think of the world of Anne Sudworth as the world you can only ever see out of the corner of your eye, and which disappears when you turn to look at it face on. "
Mick Mercer's Hex Files: The Goth Bible. -
"...her talent goes way beyond awesome."
Brian Froud -
"Anne Sudworth is an artist aligned to the great European tradition of
Dark Romanticism. She presents a re-visioning of our landscape, where
the poet communes with enchanted phantoms, and is bathed in a mystical
illumination in which the very soul of nature is revealed.
She reminds us that it is the purpose of great art to express true and
transcendent spirit."
