Bio

Born in Maine during a blizzard, I grew up being able to hear the foghorn warning ships of coastline as I drifted off to sleep. I am a poet using music as my form, and drawing more on inspiration than imagination. My music ranges from forward tilting rock (as Annie Bacon & her OSHEN), to the sweet coos of the ukulele (as The Folk Opera). I am a multi-instrumentalist with a tendency towards effusiveness.

People say I sound somewhere between Feist and Stevie Nicks. They also say the OSHEN music is “frothing with Folk Pop playfulness.” I like to mash up sensitive, literate lyrics with emotional swells of rocking hard. The OSHEN likes to make you want to dance and get a little sweaty, and most of all to feel something. Our second EP, There Is No Reason Here, was released in November 2009 on the Ninth Street Opus label. We're currently recording our first full length album.

The Folk Opera I composed on a whim (believing I was making the genre up) in Feb/March of 2009 while traveling in the UAE and southern Africa. It combines my love of hyperbole and folk music, and was my first foray into the world of the ukulele. We released the Folk Opera album on digitally and on vinyl on December 2nd, 2010, to a sold out room at the Swedish American Hall. The album was funded by our community through Kickstarter.

Through all these projects we have shared the stage with Jesse de Natale, Devon Sproule, Andy Friedman & the Other Failures, Luce, Blame Sally, Il Gato, Thomas Bryan Eaton, Terese Taylor, audiafauna, Valerie Orth Band, and many others.

"The folk music with Americana influences of Annie Bacon sounds very refreshing. The number "You Are Just An Idiot" is a contagious song. It could would be used in a scene from the film "Juno" [Seat-World, Netherlands]

"sounds fresh and clear, new and living" [Jesse DeNatale]

"Anne Bacon's music buoys the listener upon a gentle surging tide of sweet melodies frothing with folk pop playfulness and just the right dash of salty insights." [Sol Crawford, Amnesia, San Francisco]

"Annie Bacon is one of the most dynamic and charismatic performers I've ever seen, and I have seen lots. She doesn't just play songs on a stage. She creates moments between her and her audience, whether there are 6 or 600 people listening. These moments draw me in time and again. And yes - when Annie plays, it really is "her audience" as she has everyone eating out of her hands and drinking her koolaid by the time its all over. Oh - and her voice is golden and her songs are smart and simple all at once. When Annie is on stage - its pretty clear that that's where she belongs. I believe her." [Howie Cockrill, Ninth Street Opus Music Ventures]
