My vocal career has included everything from classical and folk through rock and cabaret, to finally arrive at jazz in the 1990's. Back in the day, I had the good fortune to rub shoulders with the famous (before they were famous!). Some of these include the members of Queen, Phil Collins and Annie Lennox. I was based in London and toured with a cabaret band. Appearances at that time included the Penthouse Club, the Savoy and Grosvenor Hotels and the Marbella Hilton in Spain. I also recorded a single with 8-piece jazz/rock band "Ozo" at CBS studios, but this was never released due to a band dispute.
In the early 90's, I appeared in a theatrical revue at Wimbledon Theatre- "That Cole Black Magic", staged to celebrate Cole Porter's centenary. From then on I was "hooked" on jazz, especially "The Great American Songbook" as interpreted by Ella Fitsgerald and Billie Holliday. I then studied the art of advanced jazz singing at Richmond Jazz School under the guidance of the great Eddie Harvey (pianist/trombonist, ex-Johnny Dankworth and big band arranger). I gained valuable experience on the South London jazz scene singing with Dick Laurie's Elastic Band in Putney and teaming up as a duo with pianist Trevor Pilling, eventually forming my own quartet with some of the best musicians around.
I have worked a wide variety of venues including bars, pubs, clubs, festivals, weddings, private parties and corporate functions. I lived in London until 2000, then moved to the Northwest, where I now work with the best jazz musicians available as part of a duo, trio, quartet or quintet, for a similar range of venues.
My most recent notable performances include the 2009 Southport Jazz Festival (see pics) and the Nantwich Jazz & Blues Festival '09, which were both well attended. I have currently recorded a new album "Swan Song", featuring a professional trio, together with the very talented trumpeter Steve Parry on three of the tracks and containing two of my own compositions. It was recorded in a reputable Manchester studio and will be for sale shortly.
I can usually be found at several venues in the Chester/Merseyside area, including Alexander's Jazz Bar in in Rufus Court, Chester.

"Every track from the rhythmic ‘NY Cab Ride’ and restless ‘4 Wheel Drive’ to the brooding ‘Mae’s Song’ has a terrific hook but it’s the way Mason switches tempo and moods that makes ALH great fun. " -- Diva Magazine
