ANOMOLIES is an all female collective with members spanning across the hiphop spectrum including emcees, deejays, b-girls, producers, visual artists, and beyond. There are 5 core members of the crew: Helixx (MC), Pri the Honey Dark (MC/Producer), Kuttin Kandi (DJ), Big Tara (B-girl/MC), and Invincible (MC).
Helixx and DJ Kuttin Kandi who met in NYCs hiphop scene founded ANOMOLIES crew in 1997. They then joined forces with Pri the Honey Dark and Big Tara with the common mission of building a collective for women representing all elements of hiphop, even extending to the business end of the spectrum (managers/set designers/event producers, etc.). Invincible connected with Helixx at an open-mic in 98 and moved out to NYC from Michigan to join the crew a year later. .
ANOMOLIES membership base has fluctuated over the years, reaching a peak of over 20 in '99 and is now composed of a core of 5 active members, all solo artists in their own right, who connect through collaborations, shared resources, and mutual support.
ANOMOLIES has performed extensively throughout New York, Philly, Cali, to as far as Paris, France. They have spoken on panels and facilitated workshops in various community organizations and schools, as well as numerous hiphop festivals at universities throughout the country. Opening for acts such as Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Bahamadia, Medusa, Pharoah Monch, and Le Tigre, ANOMOLIES has earned the respect of its peers, and is currently working on their highly anticipated solo and collaborative projects.
The dictionary definition of the name ANOMOLIES is:
1. To deviate from the norm. . Or
2. Something that occurs once in a lifetime.
When you break down the name it spells out NO MO LIES (no more lies).
ANOMOLIES dispels myths about women in hiphop culture. Showing that misrepresentations of women as two-dimensional stereotypes; who are not thought of as serious and skillful artists; who are considered too catty to work together; who must rely on male counterparts in the industry to become successful: are all just paper thin.
Since the ultimate critique is the solution to these lies-ANOMOLIES abbreviates to ANS or The Answer.
