Tennessee Lanier Williams (born March 26, 1911 – February 25, 1983), né Thomas Lanier Williams, was an American playwright who received many of the top theatrical awards for his works of drama. He moved to New Orleans in 1939 and changed his name to "Tennessee", the state of his father's birth.

He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for A Streetcar Named Desire in 1948 and for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1955. In addition, The Glass Menagerie (1945) and The Night of the Iguana (1961) received New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His 1952 play The Rose Tattoo received the Tony Award for best play.

    "The Wine-Drinkers"
    by Tennessee Williams

The wine-drinkers sit on the porte cochère in the sun.
Their lack of success in love has made them torpid.
They move their fans with a motion that stirs no feather,
the glare of the sun has darkened their complexions.

Let us commend them on their conversations.
One says "oh" and the other says "indeed."

The afternoon must be prolonged forever, because the night
    will be impossible for them.
They know that the bright and very delicate needles
inserted beneath the surfaces of their skins
will work after dark--at present are drugged, are dormant.

Nobody dares to make any sudden disturbance.

One says "no," the other one murmurs "why?"
The cousins pause: tumescent... What do they dream of? Murder?
They dream of lust and they long for violent action
    but none occurs.

About me:

So I'm in Shreveport, Louisianna right now working on the remake of "Straw Dogs", adapted and being directed by Rod Lurie ("The Contender", "The Last Castle", "Nothing But the Truth"). Rod and his producing partner Marc Frydman are old friends from our days making the ABC series "Line of Fire" together and it's really great to be working together again.

Rod first told me about his idea to adapt "Straw Dogs" (1971) to the American South several years ago. The original, by Sam Peckinpah, was one of his darkest and most psychologically disturbing films. Peckinpah often wrote films about people who try to be honorable but who are ultimately forced to resort to their more primal instincts in order to survive a world dominated by chaos and nihilism.

'David', played by Dustin Hoffman, is a true fish out of water. He has travelled to his wife Amy's small hometown in Ireland to as to get away from all the distractions keeping him from finishing his work as a mathematician. Hoping to create a comfortable home, and trying desperately to fit into the small community, David hires Amy's old school chums to fix the roof of their barn. As David's work continues to consume him, and as Amy continues to feel like she has no part in her husband's over-active mind, the old school chums (led by the quiet but dangerous 'Charlie') begin a slow but inevitable move to take over and reclaim what they feel is theirs.

When we began rehearsing "Straw Dogs" Rod said, "Peckinpah always felt that man was essentially an animal, and I think that's a disservice to animals." He went on to explain that he wasn't joking. Animals aren't capable of the kinds of cruelty used by humans. They don't humiliate each other. They don't organize genocide. They don't hurt for the sake of hurting.

If you haven't guessed it by now, "Straw Dogs" is an incredibly brutal film; so much so that it was banned in the UK for many years. It is still debated by film critics as either being an exceedingly honest look at human nature or a mysogynistic celebration of violence. Either way, it is masterful film making. The film escalates to the point where law not only has no meaning, it is never mentioned, and probably not thought of. David is ultimately forced to stand his ground, digging down within himself to find something which is primal enough to protect his wife, his home, and everything he has ever believed. I highly recommend "Straw Dogs" (1971). But to the faint of heart: fair warning. This one will have you cringing.

Who I'd like to meet:

Dustin Hoffman needs no introduction to most American movie-goers. From the scared young man in "The Graduate" to the desperate father in "Kramer vs. Kramer" to the iconic Raymond Babbitt in "Rain Man", he's given us some of our most loved and complicated characters. Hoffman's work is indicative of a brilliantly observant mind, capable of twisting together small threads he finds in any number of the people he comes across. From there, he taps an always full emotional life and handles its application deftly. I love this actor. That's why he and his performance in "Straw Dogs" are featured this week.

Anson! Just when I thought we lost you and your pithy reviews forever, you return with big news! Not only are you working on a Lurie-fied Straw Dogs (a clam-shelled case VHS copy of which I happen to own), but have been to Greece (my ancestral home) as well. I'm glad to hear about the Line of Fire re-teaming, good work there - and really hope you loved your trip, that Ellas was very good to you. Take care :)

Hey Boy, was flipping through the channels and my wife noticed you on, we had seen the previews but forgot it was on. We started watching it and 10 minutes later we see you get head smashed in, I 'll have to catch it next time it comes on. You did really good the little I saw of you. BTW, you coming to this side of the world for the holidays? I may be in town myself... blessings!

I used to think Shel Silverstein was creepy. What is with his huge bare feet in every picture. Weirdo. I do love his books. Very very much. I just try not to look at the back cover where the foot picture is usually located. : )
