Anthea Caddy and Magda Mayas are a cello and inside piano duo based in Berlin, Germany and sometimes Melbourne, Australia. With the combination of extended technique, microphonie and a focused acoustic sensibility the duo's aim is to redefine the parameters of their historically weighted instrumentation. Focusing on the extension of 'the instrument' they have developed a new language on their instruments that is based on the articulation of gesamtklang (total sound), as opposed to just pitch and harmony.. . . . . / /// / /
Currently working in trio with guitarist and electronic musician Annette Krebs, recordings are underway in Berlin for a record real soon

Magda Mayas is a pianist and curator currently based in Berlin, Germany. After studying jazz and improvisation in Berlin she began developing a specific set of techniques for inside-piano performance. Magda has concentrated her musical investigations on the piano and its sonic possibilities, utilizing extended techniques, amplification and preparations as a process of abstraction, whilst focusing on the physicality of both internal and external parts of the piano. As a continuation of this research Magda founded the festival Tasten-Berliner Klaviertage featuring contemporary and innovative approaches for the piano. Magda Mayas performs internationally in a variety of roles as interpreter, solo and in collaboration with varying musicians and composers: in a duo with drummer Tony Buck, in the trio Phono Phono with Michael Renkel and Sabine Vogel, the Quartet Mayas/Nutters/Olsen/Galvez and as part of the Amsterdam based N-Collective. She has appeared in various festivals including The Total Music Meeting, Konfrontationen and Festival of Exiles. Over the years Magda has performed with many leading figures in improvisation such as Johannes Bauer, Christoph Kurzmann, Andy Moore, Tristan Honsinger, Frank Gratkowski and Michael Moore.
Anthea Caddy and her cello divide their time between Melbourne, Australia and Berlin, Germany. The primary focus of her sonic investigations have been combining her knowledge base in sound with her instrumental performance. Exploiting the cello’s textural, spatial and dynamic capabilities, she draws reference points from electro-acoustic music and instrumental performance. Interested in the relationship between digital composition, environmental field recording, and acoustic performance she seeks to consolidate both the conceptual and practical aspects of these media, articulating techniques and concepts indigenous to digital spatialisation in her performances and recordings. Anthea's regular collaborations at present are in duo with Thembi Soddell (Iland, Cajidmedia), with Philip Samartzis (as part of the ensemble Absence and Presence released on ‘Unheard Spaces’), in trio with Robin Hayward and Eric La Casa, a performance/installation project ..Maps of Corners..in duo with Annette Krebs and has played with many artists including Tarab (Eamon Sprod), Clayton Thomas, Christian Wolff, Alice Hui Sheng Chang, Larry Polansky, Tony Conrad, Chris Abrahams, Tim Catlin, Robin Fox, Anthony Pateras, Domenico Sciajno......
"Like the man who awoke to find himself drowning in a river, you may
roam the dark with 4 million other somnambulists - and never know it.
One soldier, after one of these attacks, he revealed that he had been
dreaming about trying to plow a field with a balky mule. ‘That mule
made me so darn mad I socked it,' he said. When he awoke, he found that
he had hit his wife in the face and broken her eardrum. His lawyer
successfully defended him by arguing that no one could be held
accountable for acts committed in his sleep. Why doesn’t he, like the
rest of us, lie quietly and work out the worries of his subconscious in
dreams of action, instead of acting out his dreams?"
'Strange facts about sleepwalking', in Mechanix Illustrated (Mar, 1949)
