Anthology in Greek means, literally, “to pick flowers”. Didier Cannioux (Producer) and Frederic Oster (Artistic Director) have joined together to gather from the repertoire these “flowers” of 20th century music for symphonic wind band and, through this exceptional anthology, we will see them bloom once again. This type of orchestra, consisting only of wind instruments and percussion together with piano, harp and string bass, has experienced great changes in the last century. The great composers have made their mark on the repertoire, as this anthology will show. Also, less well known composers have brought with them new sounds and styles of music and the ability to write for an ensemble which must always breathe as one. This is why this anthology places so much value on the originality of the chosen works; that is to say the treatment of sound and texture and instrumental ensemble of the symphonic wind band. Our choice of repertoire reflects what we consider the best example from each composer. First, we had to set our artistic direction. To chose between the chronologic and the thematic. The simplest would have been to choose chronologically, but this would not have given enough emphasis to the different styles which this type of orchestra is able to express. So, we had to choose the thematic route, despite its limitations. By listening to the repertoire, six main themes appeared to unite the project. This anthology was therefore built like an architectural voyage. It will take you to landmarks you can’t miss which define their time. Like The symphonies and other masterpieces which are the great pillars of the edifice. We will pass by the dramatically modern facades of today (new sounds); the spiral columns and arabesques inspired by nature and imagination (sound landscapes); without forgetting the ornemental figures carved purely for the pleasure of the sculptor (light music), and to complete this musical and architectural voyage, you will discover the women composers. The choices within the musical themes now become easier. To seek out the undiscovered, the essential, the historic and the well-known. These are the works which will find a place in this anthology. Our goal is to issue every four months, the different thematic Compact Discs which will build into a boxed set testifying to the unique history of this type of orchestra (symphonic wind band, wind ensemble or chamber wind ensemble) during the 20th century in France. We hope that you will take pleasure in discovering and rediscovering these works we have chosen for you.
Volume 5 « Women composers »
“Do not approach the woman musician, for fear you will be caught in her net” ( Ecclesiasticus IX 4 , II century BC)
One might interpret the meaning of this quotation as might a 19th century philosopher do, or one could equally interpret it as might an enlightened 20th century thinker do by meaning the love and seductive love of the woman composer. This then sets the question: is there such a typically feminine thing as music? By studying the repertoire and direction of female composers in the 20th century we can clearly answer: No!! Of course one might hear more vivaciousness and humour, more refined and graceful rhythms and harmonies but the music itself is above all paramount. The importance of women in musical life today cannot be ignored, underestimated or judged to be amateur in any sense of the word. This holds equally true for the repertoire of the symphonic wind band. From Germaine Tailleferre to the young composers of today, the place of the women composer is assured. Their development can be charted. From talented musician though teacher of harmony to fully accomplished composer. Composition competitions and state or privately funded commissions no longer differentiate between men and women. Quotas and positive discrimination have no place in music. Only the talent of the writer is important. The purpose of this Disc is to demonstrate the rise to power of the creative force of the women composers and to herald the 21st century as their “Golden Age”.
