When working on zero-budget films, I am forced to play all the instruments myself - which is a real bugger because I miss out on creative collaborations with other artists.
When I have called upon other musicians, I have been lucky to call upon some really fine performers. Naomi Radom (of Coda, and other projects) performed many of my earlier pieces for violin. Also Marcus Holden has supported me through live performance and recordings. In Holland, Jacob Plooij premiered a number of pieces. The lovely Kate Adams, on cello, performed on my score for the film Daydream (also known as Majolica). A number of orchestras have also performed my works - in Australia and overseas, professional and community. These include: Tasmanian Symph, Penrith Symph, Sutherland Shire Symph (all Australia) and the Wittenberg Symph in Springfield OH.
I have also been blessed to work with some great writers and performers who have passed through Eora College in Sydney, where I teach recording technology and writing for film - Wire MC, the Stiff Gins, Jimmy Little, James Henry, Athron McCann, Kelly Staines, Steve Marquis (Songsta), Michael Brown, Lucas Hendricks, Gabby DiNallo, Scot Saunders, and many others too numerous to mention.
Influences
Influences include Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Portishead, Fat Boy Slim.
I grew up in the '70s - never really clicked with American music. So my faves (in rough chronological order) were The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roxy Music (early - not late)/Brian Eno/King Crimson and all their spin-offs, Genesis (early - not late)/Peter Gabriel (not so much Phil Collins).
Then punk hit! I was big on Radio Birdman for a while - dunno why, must have been the hormones!
Then the glorious late '70s and '80s - XTC (can't go past 'em!), Split Enz, Midnight Oil (yes the Aussies/NZers start to creep in here).
I played in bands all through the '80s, starting with an originals band (Adrenalin) that morphed into a cover band (Carbon Copy). Our drummer went off to play with the Aust. Doors Show and the singer and I put a Bowie show together (please forgive us father, for we have sinned).
Through the '90s, I was studying at Sydney Con and didn't have much time to follow popular music - preferring instead the particularly un-popular contemporary art music (most of which I abhor now!) but I played with a celtic folk band The Ragged Band all through the '90s - toured several times and put out a couple of CDs. We loved writing and singing songs in languages that few people could correct us on - Welsh and Cornish.
Since completing my course at the Con, I have focussed on writing for film and for community groups, most connected with the Hawkesbury National Fiddle Festival.
I love the orchestral colours and the lyrical melodies of Ennio Morricone - especially in his scores for Once Upon a Time in America and The Mission.
I am passionate about Renaissance choral music, particularly the more tortured sacred music of Gesualdo.
Sounds Like
Recently, much of my composition has been for film scores, but I also have a number of opera libretti to work on. I write for string quartets and orchestras, and there's also an album of songs waiting to be produced!
I like good sounds and strong melodies, and I'm interested in ear-catching production techniques. I hope to develop my own contemporary approach to the Renaissance use of counterpoint. I seek to engage the richness of multiple musical layers with modern techniques, including electronica.
Emotion is something sorely lacking from contemporary classical music - I want to put it back!
Classically trained, I write in a broad range of genres - songs, concert pieces, electroacoustic pieces, music for dance, etc
My first instrument was the violin, and I love writing for string instruments. I've been using computers for music-making for about 20 years and act as producer for other recording projects.
In recent years, most of my writing has been for film scores. Several have featured in international film festivals and have been broadcast in Australian and internationally.
I have been involved with the Hawkesbury National Fiddle Festival since its inception in 1999 - as composer-in-residence, overseeing technical production, and running the Festival's education programmes including the Youth Plays Youth competition for high school composers writing for string orchestra.
I conduct an a capella community choir, Chorella, based in Richmond NSW, and teach Music Technology at the Eora Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Chippendale, NSW.

if you love me (as a friend or more) you'll read the whole thing. What would you do if for every moment you were truly happy there would be 10 moments of sadness? What would you do if your best friend died tomorrow and you never got to tell them how you felt? So, I just wanted to say, even if I never talk to you again in my life, you are special to me and you have made a difference in my life. I look up to you, respect you, and truly cherish you. Send this to all your friends, no matter how often you talk, or how close you are, and send it to the person who sent it to you. Let old friends know you haven't forgotten them, and tell new friends you never will. Remember, everyone needs a friend. dont ever leave the one you love for the one u like, because the one you like will leave you for the one they love. tonite your true love will realize how much they love you between 1 and 4 in the morning. tomorrow the shock of your life will occur if you break the chain. you will have bad luck for 10 years, if you don't pass this on to 15 people. if you get this it means the person who sent it truly cares about you...?
KEEP UR HEAD UP!
If you wake up in a red room with no windows and doors, DON'T panic.. you're just in my heart!!! Send this to all the friends you want to keep forever...
Today is Bestfriend Day. Note from my girlfriend in romania - Flory, she is a sweetheart!
Sir Jones the brave.. hope it's all fine composing in your world..
..wanted to let you know that I'll be playing at the Basement tomorrow night (June 7th) in aid of my new album 'taming butterflies' being released..
It'd be great to see a good crowd down there to keep the place warm.. I'll have all the fine sounds of cello, horns, bass drums and layered voices to sweeten your ears as you red wine the winter night away..
The night starts at 8.. there'll be a couple of solo acoustic acts on first.. hope to see your smile then..
Well the filmmaker community was starting to get a bit stagnant due the fact that I was the only administrator and coder so the business side of the site kept me plenty busy. I have now migrated the users and posts to a location where there is more support, admins, and coders. The merger was with scenespot.com a social networking site that I purchased. All usernames and passwords from indierevolt.com are the same and your information is all still stored within the new database :) IndieRevolt.com will now redirect you to Filmmaker Community since migration we have already received new filmmakers and we hope that the trend keeps up :)
Scenespot.com - a place for shens Thank you
Artists, Musicians, Filmmakers, Gamers, Nerds, and everyone in between are welcome.
Hi Linden! Like where ur coming from very much, emotion is much much needed in modern music - there is too much emphasis on show and technique rather than stuff from the heart which is way more important. Lovely music on ur page and was real pleasure play at the festival last year. Very best wishes to you d ;)
