What defines the caliber of a DJ or the magnitude of his stature? Could it be judged from the moment the needle first strikes the record; or through the response from the crowd, while another session of rocking the venue runs its course. Maybe it's seeing the shine of the lights overhead glow from the vinyl or the expression on the faces of a diverse mass of patrons who've just heard their favorite records being played unpredictably at levels loud enough to reach the heavens.
With those remarkable skills, and an ear for music that places him among the elite, PHRESH has crafted a name and reputation that precedes him from his native New York City, and beyond.
Hailing from the literal birthplace of turntablism itself, among other elements of Hip Hop culture, PHRESH combines the landmark strength of Bronx-derived technique with the new school skill that has become indicative of the coming renaissance of urban and rhythmic music.
To simply classify his selection of music and traits would prove vain, as PHRESH has scoured the regions of the world, supplying beats, via the turntables, to every conceivable hue of skin, while simultaneously shattering cultural barriers.
Whether digging out of a crate or from a finely tailored case, PHRESH has since proven that a cultured ear for music and a trained eye for perfection are just a pair of the key ingredients to launching a DJ into the stratosphere of the chosen few selectors, and keeping himself there.
And while he may employ the use of some of the same tools other DJs look to improve their craft with, those who know PHRESH and have seen him spin will note that the comparisons end right there.
PHRESH capped off his journey in music in 1996 while working with the promotions team of the then-associated record labels of Polygram Records in New York City. The position gave him access to available vinyl, a hands-on tutorial on the record industry and the opportunity to pursue music seriously; something that had always been an aspiration of his. The result saw him churning out custom mixes by the dozen for friends and whoever would listen, while absorbing the rich sounds flowing from every avenue of the New York City scene; whether it be from the pulsating thump of freestyle, beat of consistency in house music, or the evolution in culture Hip Hop provided.
These were all readily available points of influence that would ultimately fuel the motivation that allows PHRESH to cross musical borders and play to any crowd while behind the decks. Having gained invaluable training in the industry, PHRESH set off on his own, garnering a reputation as one of the city's most sought after talents, spinning in loft parties and clubs alike while still maintaining a residency as an employee and teacher at the upstart Scratch DJ Academy.
Being one of the city's best kept secrets would hardly last long, as PHRESH took his skills behind the turntables abroad, playing to packed venues on tour, loosening up the corporate crowd and even flying in to bless the latest hot spot in selected cities.
Years removed from his days as a budding talent, PHRESH maintains the core base that helped solidify his foundation. He still keeps a regular gig in the city, offering up a blend of meticulously selected records and favorites to an often unsuspecting audience.
Aside from his talents behind the turntables, PHRESH has already proven himself outside of the arena that solidified his name, as he also wears the designation of being a producer, designer and innovator in this new age of technology.
