Anthony A. Tóth

Biography

Drummer, Anthony Tóth was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. At the age of 20, he has already established himself as an accomplished and promising young musician. He is a graduate of the Oakwood Collegiate Institute, and is now in his 4th semester at the Berklee College of Music on a Full Tuition Scholarship. While at Berklee, Anthony has had the incredible opportunity to study/Perform with Ralph Peterson Jr. Terri Lyne Carrington, Tia Fuller, John Blackwell, Darren Barrett, Neal Smith, and Ron Savage. Some highlights of Anthony’s year include performing at the Blue Note Jazz Club NYC, and being featured on a live radio show at WGBO Studios.

Throughout his years in High school, Anthony enjoyed performing with the Wind Orchestra, Jazz Big Band, playing cello with the Chamber String Orchestra, and drumming for annual musical theatre productions, including the Canadian premier of "13". Anthony was the recipient of Oakwood Collegiate’s "Most Outstanding Wind Player" for three of his four years attended. Anthony is also graduate of the Humber College Community Music Program, where he studied jazz improvisation with Juno award winning saxophonist, Kirk MacDonald and Toronto bassist Jim Vivian. While attending the program, Anthony received various honor awards including the “Don Strathdee Memorial Honor Award” for Outstanding Performance, a $2,500 Tuition Scholarship, and the Senior Achievement Award. In 2009, he was selected to be a part of the Nation-wide Yamaha Honor Jazz Ensemble, directed by Kirk MacDonald, lead instructor at the Humber College Community School.

Anthony has enjoyed a more melodic side of music, playing 4th trumpet for the city-wide Jazz FM Youth Orchestra, and touring with the highly noted Toronto All-Star Big Band.

Anthony was first discovered by a Berklee audition team in Toronto, while accompanying his Bassist brother, Alexander Toth for his audition during the Berklee World Tour. Anthony, who was 15 years old at the time, had no idea that this one incident would soon lead to much greater success at the Berklee College of Music. In May of 2009, Anthony was 1 of the 2 High School drummers internationally selected to participate in the prestigious Berklee College of Music 2009 "Summer Jazz Workshop", directed by GRAMMY Award winning artist, Terri Lyne Carrington, and renown saxophonist, Rick DiMuzio. Anthony was also asked to participate in this very workshop for the second time in a row for the 2010-year. In addition, Anthony the selected drummer for both the 5-Week Berklee Big Band directed by Wayne Naus, and the Middle Eastern Fusion Ensemble directed by Christiane Karam.

To give back to his community and share the knowledge he has gained, Anthony has worked voluntarily at his former middle school through a Co-operative Education course. His work involved guiding the students in playing their instruments, assisting with theory homework, as well as conducting and arranging music for extra curricular ensembles. Here, Anthony gained a hands-on experience within the workplace of a Music Education teacher.

In August of 2010 the Berklee College of Music in Boston awarded Anthony with a four-year, full-tuition scholarship, to attend the Undergraduate program as the Class of 2015. Anthony was the only Canadian recipient out of 11 international students to be awarded this scholarship.

Anthony eagerly plays at various venues with a variety of artists whenever the opportunity arises, and always aspires to reach new musical heights. He wishes to continue with his passion for music on an international scale - hopefully inspiring listeners, while being inspired by his fellow musicians and audiences.
