Antichrisis was founded by singer and songwriter Sid way back in 1995 in a small and godforsaken village near the german-belgium border. Originally meant to be a solo-project, Sid was soon joined by guest-vocalist Willowcat, and within a few months the legendary 80 minute demo-tape "Missa Depositum Custodi" got recorded. Its first and only edition of 500 copies received an amazing feedback within the underground community and was sold out soon after its release in early 1996. That success led to negotiations with various independent labels, and Sid decided to sign to Ars Metalli.
September 1996 saw the beginning for Antichrisis' first studio session for their debut album "Cantara Anachoreta". Sid - by this time still known by his nom de plume Moonshadow - recorded the album within only 14 days with Willowcat's vocal support. At this time Sid was in a very desolate situation concerning his private life - and the best way to express his feelings and to deal with an utterly fucked up relationship was to play that gloomy, melancholic but also furious and pushing kind of music. And that is exactly what Antichrisis is all about: to reflect Sid's feelings and emotions in the best possible way without any restrictions or musical limitations.
"Cantara Anachoreta", the band's striking debut, hit the audience by January '97 and was enthusiastically received by the press: Only once in a blue moon had a newcomer's first album indicated such well-defined and incisive style aligned with an amazingly vast number of different musical influences with enormous implicitness and distinction.
Although Antichrisis' music always beared lots of folk influences, they weren't that apparent due to the band's conventional instrumetation hitherto - until Naex joined the project in 1997 adding a completely new timbre to Antichrisis' sound with his Irish bagpipes.
Also, many of Sid's songs are arranged like stage plays dealing with love and loss, thus requiring different voices for different male and female leading parts - hence a female voice was always of great importance for Antichrisis' dramaturgic concept.
Meanwhile Antichrisis had signed to Napalm Records, and in Spring 1998 it was high time to record the debut's successor "A Legacy of Love" with new singer Lisa. Though this album did bear a few Metal references again, it primarily became a wonderful and brilliant Folk-Pop-album, containing songs that could have easily entered the charts like "Nightswan", "Our Last Show" or the smashing "Forever I Ride".
A year later the band was hitting the stage for the first time during an European tour with Tristania, The Sins Of Thy Beloved, Siebenbuergen and Trail of Tears. On this tour Antichrisis' new female vocalist Dragonfly, who had replaced Lisa, received her baptism of fire. She had joined the band just a couple of weeks before, and not only did Antichrisis promote "A Legacy of Love" live on stage, but they also took the chance of introducing some new dancefloor-influenced stuff from their forthcoming album "Perfume" to a flabbergasted audience.
Antichrisis entered the studio again in Summer 2000, this time reinforced by keyboarder Tilo Rockstroh, drummer Jens-Nils Kuge and guitarist Jens Bachmann, to forge their third album "Perfume", which contained for the very first time in the history of the band a cover version, namely Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love".
Though songs like "Like The Stars", "Goodbye to Jane", "Hole in My Head", "Carry Me Down" or "Wasteland" proved once more Antichrisis' claim for the charts, this venturous album lacked support by Antichrisis' former label Napalm Records, who weren't too happy about the band's increasing pop-appeal due to being afraid of losing their Metal credibility.
But why that long period of silence after the release of "Perfume"? Some fans received the impression that Antichrisis hadn't survived their daring musical experiment. But after a new studio session in Spring 2003, Sid suffered from some unexpected and serious emotional and physical drawbacks, hence Antichrisis was put on the back burner for quite a long time until Sid reformed the band in 2005.
So Antichrisis was ready for recording a new album called "The Legacy Remains", which is supposed to continue the story that had begun on "A Legacy of Love" - and to make both albums sound as if they were two chapters of one book, Sid decided to re-record "A Legacy of Love" before finishing the production of "The Legacy Remains".
This revised version of "A Legacy of Love" saw its release on Reartone Records in early 2006 as a digipack-edition titled "A Legacy of Love Mark II", and it definitely didn't sound at all like a simple re-issue. But once you listen to "A Legacy of Love Mark II" you will easily realise that this expenditure was worth while. The new versions of those already stirring songs develop an almost irresistible maelstrom - they seem like aural environments waiting for the listener to enter: "How Can I Live on Top of The Mountain?" is simply one of the most beautiful soundtracks never used for a movie score; R.E.M. would take themselves to the cleaners for a Folk-Pop-jewel like "Nightswan", "Our Last Show" couldn't have been done better by the Doors in their heydays and someone not being close to tears after listening to "Dancing in The Midnight Sun" has probably never fallen in and out of love. "Baleias Bailando" and "Planet Kyrah" are evidence of Sid's capability of creating magnificent pop songs with rather unorthodox sounds and arrangements, whereas "End of December" seems like a brilliant outtake of a late midnight session that The Jam, The Pogues and Bruce Springsteen could have had in a Galway pub. "Forever I Ride" proves that blending Knopflerian guitar riffs with McKennittish romanticism and Sabbath's abrasiveness doesn't necessarily have to be a mission impossible, and the raw guitar power of "The Sea" and "Trying Not to Breathe" should as well raise hell in every moshpit of this planet without attenuating dead catchy qualitites while at last "The Farewell" is the successful romantic conclusion of an album that is simply the most emotional roller coaster ride one could ever experience. Basically each song on "A Legacy of Love Mark II" could make easily a smashing hit single!
But before Antichrisis could go on working on the production of "The Legacy Remains", Reartone Records decided to stop all further releases, which meant basically the end to the former band constellation, because the band depended on rehearsing and recording in Reartone's own studio. But as Sid is not someone to easily throw in the towel, he made up his mind to turn Antichrisis into a solo-project again like it was in the early days of "Cantara Anachoreta" and to carry on with a little help from some fellow guest-musicians... and time will tell how the story continues!
Biographie
Antichrisis wurde 1995 in einem kleinen idyllischen Eifeldorf nahe der belgischen Grenze ins Leben gerufen. Ursprünglich als Ein-Mann-Projekt geplant, stiess schon wenig später Gast-Sängerin Willowcat hinzu, um Sid, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt alle Instrumente im Alleingang einspielte und unter dem Pseudonym "Moonshadow" auftrat, bei der Verwirklichung seiner musikalischen Visionen zu unterstützen.
Innerhalb weniger Monate entstand das legendäre 80-minütige Demo-Tape "Missa Depositum Custodi", das in einer Auflage von 500 Stück veröffentlicht und mit seiner Mischung aus Dark Wave, Doom, Gothic, Folk sowie Anleihen klassischer Musik in Underground-Kreisen begeistert aufgenommen wurde.
"Missa Depositum Custodi" war aufgrund positiver Besprechungen in vielen Magazinen und Fanzines schon kurz nach seiner Veröffentlichung Anfang 1996 vergriffen und führte zu einem Plattenvertrag mit Ars Metalli, wodurch bereits im September 1996 mit den Studioaufnahmen für das Debütalbum "Cantara Anachoreta" begonnen werden konnte. Sid spielte dieses Album mit Hilfe von Gastsängerin Willowcat in nur 14 Tagen ein, und so erschien "Cantara Anachoreta" im Januar 1997 und wurde von der Metal-Presse mit Lobeshymnen überschüttet: Selten zuvor hatte das Debüt eines Newcomers bereits eine solch unverwechselbare und eigenständige künstlerische Handschrift erkennen lassen.
Im Frühjahr 1998 stand die Produktion des Zweitlings "A Legacy of Love" für Napalm Records an, wobei Sid diesmal von Näx am Dudelsack sowie Sängerin Lisa unterstützt wurde. Die Einbeziehung einer weiblichen Stimme war für das dramaturgische Konzept von Antichrisis schon immer von großer Wichtigkeit, da sich die von Sid geschriebenen Songs in den meisten Fällen mit den Licht- und Schattenseiten der Liebe beschäftigen und wie kleine Theaterstücke mit einer männlichen und einer weiblichen Hauptrolle angelegt sind.
Durch die Einbeziehung des irischen Dudelsacks konnte Sid die folkloristischen Wurzeln seiner Musik noch weiter ausbauen. So setzte Antichrisis mit "A Legacy of Love" in musikalischer Hinsicht völlig neue Maßstäbe: Zwar finden sich auf diesem Album noch vereinzelt Metal-Elemente, doch stellen sie lediglich ein Stilmittel unter vielen dar. "A Legacy of Love" geriet zu einem tieftraurigen Abgesang auf eine große Liebe, zu einem romantisches Requiem voller wunderbarer Folk-Pop-Perlen, das mit Songs wie "Nightswan", "Our Last Show" oder "Forever I Ride" sogar drei radiotaugliche Hits aufwies.
Im Frühjahr 1999 folgte eine Tour, die Antichrisis gemeinsam mit Tristania, The Sins Of Thy Beloved, Siebenbürgen und Trail Of Tears quer durch Europa führte und auf der die neu hinzugekommene Sängerin Dragonfly erstmals der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurde. Da Sid Antichrisis als Medium seiner musikalischen Visionen begreift, wählt er die beteiligten Musiker nach deren spezifischen Fähigkeiten und Talenten aus, die zu dem jeweiligen Konzept, das er mit jedem neuen Album verfolgt, passen.
Im Spätsommer des Jahres 2000 entstand unter Mitwirkung von Tilo Rockstroh an den Keyboards, Schlagzeuger Jens-Nils Kuge und Gitarrist Jens Bachmann das dritte Album "Perfume", das mit Led Zeppelins "Whole Lotta Love" zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte von Antichrisis eine Coverversion enthielt.
Nach der Veröffentlichung von "Perfume" kam es zu einer langen Funkstille, in deren Verlauf der Eindruck entstand, dass Antichrisis zu existieren aufgehört hätte. Nach ersten Studiosessions im Frühjahr 2003 erfolgten einige schwerwiegende emotionale und gesundheitliche Rückschläge, die für Sid eine zweijährige Auszeit nach sich zogen, so dass zwangsläufig auch Antichrisis in diesem Zeitraum auf Eis lag.
Erst 2005 war Sid wieder voll einsatzfähig und stellte ein neues Line-up zusammen. Um die schmerzhaften persönlichen Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre zu verarbeiten, schrieb Sid neues Material für das bevorstehende Album "The Legacy remains", das inhaltlich und musikalisch an "A Legacy of Love" anknüpfen und die dort begonnene Geschichte weitererzählen sollte. Um diesen inhaltlichen Zusammenhang hervorzuheben, beschloss Sid, "A Legacy of Love" für Reartone Records neu einzuspielen, da sich der Sound von Antichrisis in den letzten Jahren stark verändert hatte - eine Entwicklung, die die Neuaufname von "A Legacy of Love", die 2006 unter dem Titel "A Legacy of Love Mark II" bei Reartone Records erschien, dokumentieren sollte.
Den beachtlichen Aufwand, der bei der Neueinspielung des alten Materials betrieben wurde, hört man "A Legacy of Love Mark II" deutlich an: Die ohnehin schon mitreissenden Songs entwickeln in ihrer neuen Form einen unwiderstehlichen Sog und werden so zu Klangräumen, die man förmlich betreten kann: "How can I live on Top of the Mountain?" ist schlichtweg einer der schönsten Soundtracks, der nie für einen Film verwendet wurde; für einen Folk-Pop-Hit wie "Nightswan" würden R.E.M mittlerweile ihr letztes Hemd geben, "Our Last Show" hätte selbst den legendären Doors zu ihren Glanzzeiten gut zu Gesicht gestanden, und wem nach der neuen Version von "Dancing in the Midnight Sun" nicht die Tränen in den Augen stehen, der hat wohl noch nie in seinem Leben wirklich geliebt. "Baleias Bailando" und "Planet Kyrah" untermauern erneut Sids Anspruch, mit ungewöhnlichen Arrangements und Sounds großartige Pop-Juwelen kreieren zu können, während der bislang unveröfffentlichte Track "End of December" so klingt, als hätten sich The Jam, Bruce Springsteen und die Pogues zu einer mitternächtlichen Jam-Session in einem Pub in Galway zusammengefunden. Mit "Forever I Ride" gelingt Antichrisis das nicht für möglich gehaltene Kunststück, Dire Straits-mäßige Gitarrensounds mit irischen Romantizismen und ungestümer metallischer Härte zu verbinden, wohingegen bei der Brachialgewalt, mit der die Gitarren auf "The Sea" und "Trying not to Breathe" losdonnern, in jedem Moshpit dieses Planeten die Hölle losbrechen müsste, ohne dass die Songs dabei an Eingängigkeit verlieren würden. "The Farewell" schließlich ist der krönende romantische Abschluss eines Albums, das die extremste emotionale Achterbahnfahrt darstellt, die je auf CD gepresst wurde: Im Grunde genommen liesse sich jeder Song auf "A Legacy of Love Mark II" als eigenständige Single auskoppeln.
Bevor Antichrisis jedoch die finale Produktion am Nachfolgealbum "The Legacy Remains" beenden sollte, beschloss Reartone Records einen Veröffentlichungsstop, was zugleich das Aus für die bisherige Bandkonstellation bedeutete, denn da die bislang an Antichrisis beteiligten Musiker ausschliesslich für Proben und Aufnahmen im Reartone-eigenen Studio zusammenkamen, war eine weitere Zusammenarbeit unter den neuen Voraussetzungen leider nicht mehr möglich. Doch da Sid nicht so schnell die Flinte ins Korn wirft, beschloss er stattdessen, Antichrisis wie in den alten Tagen von "Cantara Anachoreta" wieder als Solo-Projekt unter Beteiligung einzelner Gastmusikerinnen und -musiker weiterzuführen... und die Zeit wird zeigen, welchen weiteren Verlauf diese neue Entwicklung nimmt.
