For many, the midlands were a barren void of musical emptiness but for the dedicated few legendary nights were had. Rococo, Willies Teapot, Cake and Breathless in Birmingham and Venus in Nottingham all provided me the soundtrack of cutting edge music and legendary atmospheres. Hearing the likes of DJ Dick, Alfredo and Laurent Garnier play and feeling the warmth of these nights really inspired me. Its not so much harping on about how it used to be it just set the benchmark for what I wanted to learn. Not just the art of DJing and mixing but that next level of crowd interaction through musical selection. Yeah inspiring times."
Armed with this inspiration and a natural talent for recognising and championing underground bomb tracks Anton was soon emulating his mentors at a variety of venues across the city.
Launching and co-promoting several nights in Birmingham, namely Fuse, Melange and Floatation broke the back of perfecting his synergy with the growing crowds. People travelled from far and wide to bars, clubs, poolroom basements, recording studio rooms, barns and boats to experience first hand the musical diversity, quality control and crowd rapport regularly offered up. Other local promoters took note and soon residencies followed at a diverse variety of nights. The infamous House of God paid dues with a regular monthly showing, Viva Havanas live Latin and Cuban collaborations followed along with regular spots at Nutrition, Almost Del Mar, Procreation, Rock-Steady, Love The Life, Sugar Lounge, The Bomb and fiftytwodegreesnorth.
"More than anything I was happy with the variety of music that I was playing from week to week. I was getting booked at a techno venue one minute then dropping Latin sets with musicians the next, which of course I loved."
But even with a diverse set list of music ranging from Disco, Soul, Hip Hop and Funk to Techno, Contemporary House, Breaks and Latin there were still tunes laying idle in Antons box. Enter a two-year stint on Birminghams Sweet Fm with his own show and finally the circle of musical diversity was completed.
"The show on Sweet was brilliant in that respect. I had an outlet for all of the music that I wanted to share that I considered to be groundbreaking. Radio was a fantastic experience and although it was different not having the crowd interaction, musically you could afford to be a little more self-indulgent. Basically if I had a track sitting there that was quality but I hadnt found a way of working it into my venue sets it got aired which was very satisfying."
Flip to the current day and the journey continues. A splash of Deansgate bars, sets in France, a visit to the 333 amongst his regular commitments and its looking rosier by the day. Finally and deservedly the word is spreading across the waters. Playing alongside the likes of Charles Webster, The Amalgamation of Soundz, Digs and Whoosh, Bougie Soliterre and Keb Dharge to name just a few is opening his talents to an ever growing and appreciative audience. Refusing to be pigeonholed and having over 13 years DJing experience his work is far from completed. Exciting times are ahead as he continues to focus on producing his own material and will hopefully soon see releases in the not so distant future.
