Bio
I grew up in a family rich with culture and art. All us children in the family were busy doing plays, singing and dancing at every family party while growing up. My mother, Lubna Marium, one of the best dancers I know, always brought these maestros from India to come and perform in Dhaka, through her organisation Shadhona. I've grown up seeing greats like Vilayet Khan, Zakir Hossain, Dagar brothers, Birju Maharaj, Leela Samson and so many gurus perform right at our house. When you see so much greatness around you it is overwhelming and for me music was something I never thought I could achieve. My first guru was Ustad Sagiruddin Khan, the Sarengi Maestro. Unfortunately for me, I was too young to appreciate him or to learn as I now wish i had. He passed away when I was in my early teens. I fell in love with singing much later, when I met the Bauls, specially after hearing the words of Lalon Shai through the powerful voice of Kangalini Sufia. She blew my mind when I was in my late teens, and I fell in love with Lalon Shai (the late great mystic of Bengal). Unlike classical, this was a form that had no barriers. Here the point was to convey the message of the song from the heart. The free form of the bauls, all that questioning & the fact that these women sang all night, all over the country, debating issues of religion, society and sexuality, entranced me! I haven't looked back since. The philosophy of the Bauls, their thoughts, their humility has surrounded and penetrated me ever since. I started writing my own songs; then formed our band Bangla with my friends, my musical soul mates, Buno, Arnob, Kartik, Shantonu (and after Shantonu left) Jibon and Nozrul Bhai :) After the release of our first album Kingkortobbobimuro in 2001, we became a cult band with a huge fan following. When the hype got bigger than the music, we took a break and later released our second album Prottutponnomotitto, as a protest against religious intolerance. Bangladesh had been going through it's share of religious extremism, where it had become difficult for artists to sing in open places. We have always strongly stood for an inclusive, secular Bangladesh. It's all about the music and our thoughts .. not about the hype,so we tend to take it easy :) We're in the process of finishing our 3rd album. Separately, I started learning singing again from my guruma Kalpana Bhattacharya, of the Agra gharana. Kangalini Sufia continues to inspire me as do so many Fakirs like Aklima Fakir,Rob Fakir, Shadhon Khyepa and so many many more. They are all my gurus. I've had the great opportunity to make music with some incredible musicians on my own. Such as Pandit Tanmoy Bose, Jonas Helborg, Sam Mills & Susheela, Indian Ocean (the band), Jazmin and so many absolutely beautiful musicians from around the globe and right here in Bangladesh. Thank you all for the melodies n grooves. It's been a good musical journey so far ... the sky is the limit ... May the numinous express itself through this vessel called, Anusheh! May I understand this existence through this path. Joy Guru! -
