GeneralBooks, writing and Manchester City football club.
MusicGod. Anything that's a bit left-field, a bit challenging. What's the point in having a collection full of the same stuff. I like experiencing a vast range of sounds. At the moment I'm liking Patrick Wolf, Ellen Allien, Nik Bartsch, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, anything the Optimo guys do, Bill Evans, Art Brut, Leonard Cohen, The Unicorns.
MoviesAll sorts. Art-house stuff. Altman - I've got a thing about ensemble works. Liked Hidden and Lemmings last year. Greenaway, Pasolini and more mainstream directors like Scorsese and Malick.
TelevisionBoring documentaries. Anything that teaches you stuff. Don't like to watch a lot of TV. Think most of it is shit. But I do have a bit of a soft spot for 80's mini-series things like Threads, Roots, GBH and to my shame even Shogun.
BooksThe Damned Utd by David Peace is incredible. Probably my favourite novel of past few years. Big pompous American writers mainly, Pynchon, Roth, Auster, McCarthy, Updike, Dellilo, Ford, Bret Easton Ellis, Joyce Carol Oates. Do like Margaret Atwood, Rushdie, some Amis (Money, London Fields - thought House of Meetings was great), some Ballard, Will Self and a endless host of other writers.
HeroesTony Benn (for still fighting the fight), Tony Wilson (for factory, granada reports and the hacienda - get well soon Tony), Pedro Almoldovar (for loving women), Patti Smith (for horses), Bill Werbeniuk (for combining a prodigious appetite for alcohol, with sportmanship and a cunning tax dodge) and Stan Lee (for all the comics).

About me:
Our next event on September 27th features special guests Tom McCarthy and Russell Celyn Jones and is part of Hackney's Write to Ignite Festival. Matthew De Abaitua will also be reading from his debut novel. Here's an image of Adelle Stripe, Brutalist poet, reading at our last event. Anything but Hackneyed is a local writer-reading event that takes place at The Broadway Bookshop on Broadway Market, E9.

We're hoping to publish an anthology of local writing (fiction and non-fiction) in the near future and are always looking for submissions and new readers.

As well as being an event, Anything but Hackneyed is also a person: me and I write flash fiction, short stories and novels. My work has been published by The Guardian, 3:AM magazine, Dogmatika, Laura Hird Showcase, Scarecrow, Industry of Guilt, and Le Monstre.

Who I'd like to meet:
Other writers, especially from Hackney area. A good agent.

C(o)urt Interpretations is the first full-length collection by one of Slovenia’s most provocative young poets, Aleš Mustar. In Mustar’s court, consumerism stands on trial alongside “post-post-modernism” and Dostoevsky. With his witty philosophical riffing on the trappings and evasions of contemporary society, Mustar sharply demonstrates what it means to poeticize with a gavel.

Hi Rik. Thanks for allowing me to read last night. It was great to hear Hari as well. I'm sorry we didn't have a chance to speak afterwards. If baby duties permit it, do come along to the party on 10 November.

What better way to impress that indie kid with the glasses and tattoos? Let them catch you reading a book.

Cheers for letting us read last night, Rik. And just to show that the world of satirical obituaries never rests, check out today's offering - a tale of blonde ambition versus a newt-stroking villain...

Hi ABH,

We're local authors and have just had our collection of satirical obituaries "As A Dodo: The Obituaries You'd Like To Read" published by Summersdale. Jane at Broadway Bookshop kindly agreed to stock some copies of our book and we wondered if we could do a short reading of a few of the obits one evening.

Best,

Hey Anything but Hackneyed

After almost 9 years living quietly by the sea in the most south-westerly corner of England, in one month I'm moving to the centre of Hamburg in Germany. Why?

Because it's there.

To mark the occasion I've added the song Someone Stole My Roof to my jukebox. It's not brand new, although it is on the current Life Is A Mirror cd, and the lyrics seem somehow appropriate. I'll post them to my blog later.

I'm hoping to have my new song Dust Off Your Wings completed and online before it's time to pack up my studio!

Love, Peace, Toast & Tea,

Lee

Aug 9 2007 10:47 AM

Hi Rik. Howz it going? Upcoming ABH gigs look interesting. Thanks for being a friend of Beat the Dust, the new space for writers to flex their literary muscle and for discerning readers who see reading as exercise. Why not submit some poetry, a short story or a piece of flash fiction. To view the website and download a print version of the submission guidelines, click here. Melissa.

Hey Anything but Hackneyed

I've uploaded 'To You, Beside Me', the final song to be completed for the forthcoming 'Life Is A Mirror' cd.

It's free to download until the fourth of June.

There is, as ever, a higher quality preview in the second jukebox on the page, and I've posted the lyrics to my blog.

Best wishes from Lee

Hey Rik, great reading yesterday. Nearly fell in the canal about six times cycling home, but it was worth it. Next time I'll bring the good foot, ha!

Sorry I didn't make last night. Horrendous day at work combined with gridlock on the roads, and it was too late to make an appearance. How did it go?
Next time I'm taking another strategic meeting in town beforehand.
