FEATURING
The brilliant acoustic works of singer songwriter
Jesse Stanford of Oak Soldier
www.myspace.com/notthemoon

article in PLAY! magazine
Check out the article on Oak Soldier in today’s issue of PLAY! magazine out of New Haven, CT. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, here is a snippet of the two page article from editor, Jon Cooper.
“[Stanford] gave us an early listen to a five-track demo he’s hoping will flush out his first full-length release and it’s evident he can write. “I always think the last one is going to be the last one,” he says. If any of his latest offerings are “the last one,” it wouldn’t be a bad way to go out.
Happy Birthday, the first track off The Cellar Recital - which Stanford admits is his favorite - is semi-autobiographical, like most of his writing. The stories Stanford tells are of love and self-discovery and they make for one hell of a night-driving soundtrack.

What’s most amazing about Stanford’s singing is his voice. He effortlessly moves from one song to the next and it sounds as if someone else has taken control of the mic. The disc’s second track, East Virginia, is reminiscent of early Counting Crows … not in the winy Adam Duritz way, but that the upbeat melody and lyrics just fit. “If it’s cold outside, then maybe I can warm you; if you feel alright, then I will let you be; and if you get the spins, I will hold your hair back,” Stanford sings. It’s just, well, comfortable.
The Superficial Area of the Earth, the EP’s final offering, is as close to en epic as Stanford has penned. “We fell asleep inside our radios,” he sings following a drawn-out acoustic beginning that builds to a brilliant mix of strings and keys.”

"The Art of Making Music" PLEASE READ & RESPOND
Current mood: productive
Category: excited Music

Please read this entire blog and then respond with what this project means to you as a musician or local music enthusiast and what affect you feel it would have on your local music scenes.

"The Art of Making Music" is a photography project that will be a touring exhibit of galleries and fine coffee house galleries by 2008. Most importantly I hope to make it into a "coffee table" book by the same year, to be distributed world-wide. The book "The Art of Making Music" will be aprx. 70% photographs (aprx 175) and 30% will be the very important story behind this whole project. This book will advocate for supporting our local, unsigned & independent label musicians all over the world, there is a local music scene everywhere, in every city of every state & province of every (almost) country, from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, South America, Africa and everywhere in between. Each and every scene consists of talented, as well as yet talented musicians of many different genres, that run the gamot. There is great music for everyone right in our own backyards, wherever you live.

The photos(the muscle) that will make up this book will consist of bands & musicians unsigned or on indepenedent labels mostly from Connecticut, though this book is not about these bands/musicians these great musicians will be a fine representation of all local, unsigned, indepenedent label artists from every local music scene in the world. The style of photography will be that of the classic, timeless images of the 50's, 60's & 70's (Elvis, Stones, Dextor Gordon, Beatles, Ray Charles, Patti Smith, the Clash....) done in high grain black & white FILM. Musicians will be photographed candidly during rehearsals, in the recording studios, before & after gigs, promotional photos, as well as live performances - pretty much anything that has to do with "Making Music".

The story (the heart) behind the idea for "The Art of Making Music" will begin with my own personal story of how and when I was introduced to the local music scene here in Connecticut, and the major affect it's had on me. I will also tell of the hard work and dedication you fine musicians put into your craft, practice, learning, writing, rehearsing, gigging, recording, promoting, and most importantly trying to build a fan base. Which brings me to the very reason for doing this book, most of the time when I attend a local show the bands or musicians before me are performing as if there were 50,000 people in front of them. When I look back behind me, most of the time I only see a handful of people, and it's sad.

My wife and I came to the conclusion that the average person thinks that if a band or musician isn't signed to a major record label, there must be a reason, so why go out and see bad music. So this book will let those people know that there are probably millions more unsigned, local and independent label musicians than there are major label artists. There are far more talented musicians that are not signed to a major record label.

This book will appeal and affect musicians, music enthusiasts and every kid who is thinking of picking up a musical instrument.

Over the past eleven years I have had the opportunity to witness some of the greatest musicians & bands I have ever seen & heard in my life, and with "Myspace.com" I have been able to hear such great music that I would never have even known about, bands from around the world! The U.S., Canada, Europe, Iceland, Japan, South America, as well as bands from right here in my home state that I never knew about.

This book means alot to me and even more if I can get it published and distributed worldwide this book is my way of giving back to the musicians, who have given me what I crave... and that is your music. Thank you.

If you all can do me a huge favor and respond to this blog with your views, opinions, and ideas about this project, as well as telling me about the music scene in your area, let me know how you think this book would affect your peers, and if you believe that this book would market well in your area I would be extremely grateful.

I will be sending out a book proposal to a major publishing company, and I would like to send along a page filled with all of your statements that you have given me on this project, along with your statements I will put your name and location to let the publisher know that this book will affect many people in many areas of the world as well as carry a powerful message to all bands, musicians and music fans & enthusiasts. So please respond as soon as you can so I can begin collecting these responses. I'm hoping for a wide representation from all over.

When this book IS published, I will certainly put your names in my book along with your bands contact info(website). I'm actually thinking on having all the statements added into the book itself, again accompanied with your name, band and location.

Thank you ALL very much in advance -

Andrew Wallach
