Three giddy boys tickling your booty hole in an open garage on a sunny afternoon.
Most of the bands I have known before Apple Nasty have spent their time trying to cultivate and maintain an image that will carry them to success. Bands work to generate a loyal following of fans, hone their musical abilities, and get noticed by potential labels and managers. The reality of culture and music is, however, such that bands with a good marketing campaign and tired, derivative music are exposed very quickly, and there are many such bands that come down the pike. We see them come and go in the clubs and bars and only the haircuts seem to change.
Every now and then, there are a handful of bands that fans are genuinely drawn to, without marketing, because of their sheer unexpectedness. Apple Nasty might be another one of those bands that would be marketed with abstractions like "surprising," "fun," "raw," and "energetic," but these are dull, cliché labels that obscure more than reveal the bands they are so often attached to. And so, we avoid them.
What Apple Nasty is depends a great deal on who you are and why you are listening. If you came of age in the seventies, you might joke that you hear a bit of the Jackson 5 in the crafted multi-part harmonies and the rolling, punchy bass. If you grew up in the eighties, you might hear a thread reminiscent of the Dead Milkmen or Devo somewhere in the quirky beats and catchy nonsense that will hum itself from your mouth after the show. If you remember the halcyon days of grunge when it seemed possible that any town could have a scene, then you might hear enough muddy distortion and the tried and true basics of songwriting underneath that could make you feel like dusting off your guitar. If you are coming of age now, you might hear something you have not heard that makes you think that music that takes itself too seriously is about as unfulfilling as bad pornography. Apple Nasty is good pornography: amusing, memorable, and stimulating. Also like good art, Apple Nasty is an experience you won't mind sharing.
As people, they have worked and developed for years to reach a point where they can record and play in situations that will let them succeed or fail based on their talents, and they have matured to the point to know that success is a good set in the right setting where people know or will come to know your music. As such, you are invited to come and judge them. No one will sell you any image, and you will hear something not quite like what you have heard before.
If this sounds something like a manifesto or a movement, it is, but fear not. The renowned anarchist, Emma Goldman, once said, "If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your revolution."
Yes, you can dance, if you can find room among the band to do so.
