FROM THE WRITER & DIRECTOR, GUSTAV GAUNTLETT -
FIRST AND FIVEMOST, PEACE AND RESPECT TO EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO LOVES HIP HOP AND PERFORMANCE ART.
This play is my addition to the artistic world that keeps millions of us alive and loving life. As a newcomer to NYC almost exactly one year ago, I was lucky enough to have 3 MC’s show me love and become my first true friends on the East Coast: Why G, Homeboy Sandman and Tah Phrum Da Bush. These three treated me like family and I learned about New York Hip Hop through them, whether they knew it or not, they were always teaching me.
Now it’s my time to show my skills and teach the world about Hip Hop Theater. "Big Apple Turns to Cider," is a 90-minute play written ENTIRELY in rhyme. It’s got amazing Hip Hop, R&B and Jazz beats and the cast is made up of MC’s, singers, actors and poets. The story follows an out-of-towner and his journey into the history of Hip Hop music in New York.
I found that the only way to be successful in NY is to learn as much about the culture as possible, and the best way to do this is hear it first hand by people who’ve lived through it, this is what Why G, Sandman and Tah have done for me and there are incredible characters in the play who do this for the main character, Cali.
I GUARANTEE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN A SHOW LIKE THIS IN YOUR LIFE.....Period.
This is artistic innovation at its finest and this is only the beginning. This is a movement and I will push it until I’m gone or until the earth blows up from human pollution, whichever comes first.
Peace and respect to all of you. I’ll see you at the show.
