Appliance are Michael Parker, David Ireland and James Brooks

Background

Appliance were initially formed by school friends James Brooks, David Ireland
and Stuart Christie. After recording the debut track "Weightless Conditions" for an improvisational compilation on the M.T.B. record label in 1996,
Stuart left the band to focus on his solo project Harmony 400.
Later that year bassist Michael Parker joined.

The new line up then produced the EP trilogy Organised Sound,
Into Your Home and Time & Space
(released between May 1997 and July 1998) on various indie labels.
Appliance signed to Mute Records in late 1998 following an 'On' piece in the NME.

Mute Records era
Appliance released debut LP in 1999 'Manual' featuring singles 'Food Music' and 'Pacifica'.
In 2000 the band released 'Six modular pieces', a mini album of mainly intrumental tracks.
In 2001 they released the 'Imperial Metric' LP which featured 'A gentle cycle revolution' and 'Land, Sea and Air' singles.
In 2003 they released the 'Are You Earthed?' LP featuring the 'Go Native' single.

What the critics said

Q Magazine - 3 out of 5 "...this is faux European road-movie music in search of a Wim Wenders screenplay.
At its best...it's bewitching....Worthy, nonetheless."

Mojo "...surprisingly joyful.
It soon becomes clear that this trio...are having a great time, revelling in their chemistry while trying to maintain an icy cool throughout....beguiling..."

Wire "...Tight and concise, they allow enough time for each song to set its own unique tone before moving on.
And just when you think you can second-guess where their measured music is going, they introduce some Led Zeppelin-like reverberating guitar..."

Alternative Press - 4 out of 5 - "...excellent from beginning to end..."

CMJ "...thrives on the flutters and pulses of rigged keyboards and guitars,
grounded by a straight-ahead drum kit and perfectly detached vocals..."

Tours
They have toured with Wire, Snow Patrol, Add N to X and Goldfrapp.
Their most recent show was at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in July 2003.
They have played two live BBC 'In the city' shows, one supporting Pulp in Birmingham.

Details
Appliance recorded four Peel Sessions and were 44th in John's Festive Fifty in 1999 with Food Music.
The band were championed by John Peel and were lucky enough to attend John Peel's '40 years in broadcasting' celebration.

We Are Tokyo [EP on iTunes, Amazon, 7digital]

Jun 24 2009 2:53 PM

Hey!

We realise how this is quite obviously automated and you will probably consider it as spam and ignore it.. but if you are feeling the need for a some fresh new music please visit our page and give our new EP a listen. We've worked really hard on it and had some excellent feedback so far and would love to hear what you guys think.

"Exciting, Striding and assured. It has an energy reminiscant of everything that was good about the Klaxons debut album.." - BBC Radio Bristol.

"The overall sound echoes that of Bloc Party but with great conviction and sophistication. Go see them live if you can." - iTunes review.

It's also available to buy through our website and itunes if you really do like it.
